Google gave folks a brief glimpse at its super secret self-driving cars last fall, but nothing like what it's just showed off at the TED conference that's happening this week in Long Beach, California. The company is not only actually letting attendees inside the autonomous car for a first-hand demonstration, but it's intentionally stepped things up to an "aggressive" level to show just how capable the car really is-- we're talking squealing tires and really tight cornering (all on a closed course, naturally). Head on past the break for a view from both inside and outside of the car courtesy of Search Engine Land.

the camera perspectives are utter useless. for all you know the guy is driving with his right hand?

Yeah, cause a multi-billion dollar company with a long reputation for innovation decided to fake a video of a self-driving car.
professional skepticism ... i use it a lot.
i'm sure google will eventually invent something like this but till they use proper camera angles i wont believe. also this technology is not new. a european car maker had a video where the car drove itself - but it kept distance using some sort of magnets on the car. i'll try to dig up the video it was on Motoring (the tv show) few years back. car was only tested on the companys parking lot.

Is it just programmed to go around a course like that or can it actually see obstacles and maneuver around them? If its the latter thats really cool but I think its unlikely.

See obstacles and maneuver around them. Darpa has been holding competitions for years.
