After driving in japan for a month, believe me cases like this are the exception, not the norm. Their roadwork goes just as slow as ours.

one out of four drops were successful.
If it were me, I'd continue with that plan until something better comes up.
Water cannons are on their way.

A helicopter can drop the load straight down.
A water bomber plane has to be moving at 150+mph just to stay airborne - how "straight down" is that water going to go?
This is the problem with this thread: people yapping without turning their brains on even just a little bit. Seriously, this is NOT rocket science (or nuclear science). THINK about it for just TWO SECONDS before you ask stupid questions.

I'm not no nuclear expert but reading this article make's it seem more crazy then what the media is reporting. http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/n...odine?page=0,0
The expert seems to think things will become very very bad soon

The thing is nobody knows and won't commit to saying anything about the nuclear power plant situation cause the situation is changing all the time.
The Americans are telling its people to move 50 miles away. Do they know something the Japanese don't?
The other day, the Prime Minister was seen yelling (maybe swearing) at the people who run the nuclear power plant. They were not disclosing everything. Yesterday, the people in charge apologized to the Japanese people.
In the olden days, they would be committing Hara Kiri. According to the news, the people at the plant have had a history of safety violations. Perhaps they are small violations, but I have this feeling there's more to the story. I don't think the nuclear facility has the potential for huge disaster - people are playing it safe. No harm in that.
Someone mentioned, "Where's the Emperor?" The Emperor does not address his people unless there is good reason to. The country is run by the government. The Emperor, however is, in a way, a hella lot more powerful. The Japanese people look to him for spiritual guidance in times such as this. He told the Japanese people to gunbare - to be strong, not give up hope, and stay calm. The first time ever, the Emperor has had to address his people.

I think TEPCO is in a bad situation, because people want to know more and more, but there really is nothing for them to say. They just need to wait it out another week or so, and then they can get rid of the waste and everyone can go about their merry ways.

Seems like your a nuclear expert too SkinnyPupp. Can you explain to me how this plant isn't going to blow up?
I've been following this for a few days and have heard a handful of "expert" reports that said thing wouldn't get to this point. At firsts everyone was saying it was nothing and that the biggest thing that was going to happen to these plants were that they would be out of operation for about a year to 18 months. Then stuff started to blow up.

Shit happens and things change from hour to hour. Experts could not predict that the vents would jam. Accidents happen no matter how prepared you are.
There's very little one can do anyway. Should the Japanese evacuate their entire country? Should we all wear tin hats in NA?

I'm not a nuclear expert, nor do I claim to be one. I just read the information that is out there, and ignore the speculation and raving lunacy that is twice as loud.
Nobody said it wasn't going to get to "this point" whatever you think "this point" is. Really nothing has changed since the first few days, except more than one reactor has cracked. So instead of cooling one reactor, they have to cool three. If that's what you meant by "this point" then I don't see how any "expert reports" could have said it would or wouldn't happen.

Somehow, GlobalPost doesn't look like a particularly unbiased news source... Pretty much every article on the site is doom-and-gloom, end-of the-world, we're-running-out-of-cookies... and most of it looks like opinion stuff, not hard facts.
How many times do we have to post these links? Every two pages someone else comes in here with yet another doomsday link...
Once again: an article written by a layman and then edited BY MIT NUCLEAR PHYSICISTS - in other words, people who KNOW WHAT THE FUCK THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT : http://theenergycollective.com/barry...te-explanation
And a bit from the Washington State Department of Health: http://www.doh.wa.gov/Topics/japan-faq.htm
And the CBC: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/britis...t-concern.html http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/britis...rs-update.html
And the Sun: http://www.vancouversun.com/technolo...897/story.html

On a side note, I just saw on the local news that people in HK and China are flocking to supermarkets and stockpiling salt. |

IIRC it's the most common way that people in industrialized nations get their dietary requirement of iodine.
That said, one would have to ingest ridiculous amounts of table salt to get an appreciable dose of KI.
