You don't HAVE to buy it. But Apple does 100% of their own warranty work and will not allow their dealers to handle it. If you buy an iphone from Telus and then it bunks out after the DOA period (iirc it's 30 days) then you're SOL without the warranty (because Telus won't reimburse the dealer for any replacements or repairs because Apple won't reimburse them). This often creates HUGE problems for the selling dealer if people declined the warranty but come back with problems on their phone later and is likely the cause of the Connect policy. I do know other dealers who have a similar policy as well.
This is the way APPLE has set it up, not the dealers as dealers make absolutely nothing on Apple warranties (they cost the dealer $75 to sell and they sell them for $75).
The way the cell phone industry works is a lot more convoluted than most people imagine.
