My Computer keeps freezing

I don't know what to do, I'm thinking of reformatting it - will that stop it from freezing?
it freezes every 1-2 hours.

some specs:
Processor: Intel Vivi with an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6400
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7300
Memory 2408mb
Hard Drive: 500GB
Optical Drivers: SuperMulti DVD burner with lightscribe technology and DVD rom
Wireless: Keyboard, Mouse and LAN
(i just copied this off the sticker on my computer Lol)

I searched around and possible problems could be over-heating, out of date drivers, registry problems.. but i dont know how to fix any of that .. im not a computer whiz

it just freezes randomly, no specific program activates the freezing. 2 times it froze in the middle of a video. That's all the info i can give. please help, all feedback is much appreciated

Try downloading ccleaner from filehippo.com it will clean out your computer. See if that works. Your wires may be loose or there is a virus.

System restore to an earlier time first, before reformatting, if you plan to take the reformat route. Sometimes system restore works.

i'm surprised none of u suggested diagnosing for a hardware problem

burn the 'ultimate boot cd' and run memtest+ and hard drive tools like hdat2

does this happen at all in safe mode?

Do u have external hdds connected? Sometime they go into idle state and when ur computer needs to access something in there it'll need to spin it up first which causes windowns to hang for a good 30sec.
