Not eating breakfast.

Hi RS,

Recently I haven't been eating breakfast (or I eat something super light like some fruit or something ). Is there something wrong with me? My body just doesn't feel good if I eat a full on breakfast, etc. Any thoughts?

I haven't eaten a breakfast in quite some time and I feel the effects. I feel a bit sluggish through the morning until lunch, and my mind feels much slower to react.
What a healthy breakfast does:
-Helps concentration and problem solving throughout the day
-Provides you with energy

Fruits in the morning is always a great idea. Breakfast isn't supposed to be a full fledged meal. Just a small jump start for your day.

As above, eating breakfast will give you energy required for focus/work, but if you don't feel those effects, it's not a big deal to not eat breakfast as long as you are not overly snacking throughout the day due to hunger or end up eating more total calories through the day to compensate. The 'myth' of eating breakfast reduces fat gain/obesity, etc. is because most people who skip lunch end up grabbing snacks before lunch, or eating huge lunches to satiate their hunger.

Depends what you too as well. I get really physical at work so I need to fill myself up to keep my energy up.
At school I eat less because I just sit in a desk all day

No, you're fine.

Anyone who says you NEED to eat breakfast is an idiot.

First of all, your body doesn't care whether you eat one meal a day or 6. Metabolism-wise, it's the same.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9155494
Quote:

More importantly, studies using whole-body calorimetry and doubly-labelled water to assess total 24 h energy expenditure find no difference between nibbling and gorging.
As for needing breakfast in order for you to remain alert and awake, I refer you to this:

http://www.ajcn.org/content/88/3/667.full

Quote:

Cognitive performance, activity, sleep, and mood are not adversely affected in healthy humans by 2 d of calorie-deprivation when the subjects and investigators are unaware of the calorie content of the treatments.
Translate that into, if you think skipping a meal is making you slow, then you're likely being a bitch, so harden the fuck up.

The hunger pangs you feel are a combination of:

- Your body being conditioned to release ghrelin at a certain time (i.e. you're conditioned to eat at a certain time. If you don't, then your body will adapt)
- You mistaking thirst for hunger.

^what about eating for dieting??

sonick 04-04-2011 10:56 AM

Diet wise eating less frequently is actually effective in losing fat while still maintaining muscle mass for those who are already fairly fit (10-15% BF) but need to lose that extra fat, through intermittent fasting plans such as LeanGains and Lyle MacDonald's Ultimate Diet 2.0. It can be seen as more inefficient compared to full-out bulking or full out cutting, but it avoids the negatives of both (gaining fat/getting a gut while bulking or losing strength/muscle mass while cutting).

Basically Intermittent Fasting is better for blood-glucose levels, as well it utilizes calories more effectively.

I have been on the Leangains schedule of 16hr fasting 8hr feeding (eating between 1pm and 9pm), and I've definitely noticed a less bloaty-looking gut and more ab definition. Read more about leangains here: http://www.leangains.com/

really??? i find that if you make your portions smaller, cut out refined sugars + grains, and eat about every 3 hours that it works and wouldnt it be better than fasting??

sonick 04-04-2011 11:19 AM

Different schools of thought, but the LeanGains stance on frequent eating vs fasting is as follows:

Quote:

"Studies using whole-body calorimetry and doubly-labelled water to assess total 24 h energy expenditure find no difference between nibbling and gorging".

Since then, no studies have refuted this. For a summary of the above cited study, read this research review by Lyle McDonald.

Earlier this year, a new study was published on the topic. As expected, no differences were found between a lower (3 meals) and higher meal (6 meals) frequency. Read this post for my summary of the study. This study garnered some attention in the mass media and it was nice to see the meal frequency myth being debunked in The New York Times.
From his understanding, meal frequency has no effect on the body's metabolic rate, whether it be 6 small meals or 3 big ones. However, 6 small meals does keep blood glucose levels at a higher level for prolonged period of time than lower frequency meals, which can cause problems for people who have issues with insulin production or blood glucose intolerances.

Interesting reads-

Now if you simply reverse the order of my post, my god, you have an answer to your question. Reasoning FTW!

basically what dafonz mentioned unless this is related to physical training, then it is a whole different picture.

sonick 04-05-2011 05:46 AM

Read the articles i've posted, intermittent fasting can also be effective in cutting body fat while maintaining muscle in resistance training, and is often used by fairly fit people to get down to single digit body fat.

whos willing to be dafonz is in awesome shape and has a physically demanding job :troll:. im sure those studies are highly relevant if youre a 120 lb desk jockey.

If you are physically active in any way, you are going to want to eat breakfast cause youll be super hungry if you dont, end of story.

ConCho 04-06-2011 09:17 PM

If you eat once a day your stomach can get bloated because of all the acids that is building up or so I learn in health class . Just eat a light breakfast , have something in your stomach , better than nothing . It will help you get over your day no matter the task .

At first not eating breakfast and starting again will make you feel uncomfortable but it's temporary . As soon as you get into a daily routine of eating breakfast you will feel fine and might even feel energetic .

Oh no, you've totally busted me. Nothing gets by you. There's absolutely no way I could be athletic.

Darn. Maybe you could show me a thing or two in the gym?

DaFonz 04-07-2011 12:03 AM

BTW, here's a guy who skips breakfast (any of the clients on leangains are).

Yah fuck, he sure looks like a 120lb desk jockey.

You on the other hand, could probably stand to lose some weight you big tub of lard. Go eat some twinkies fatty

SkinnyPupp 04-07-2011 12:28 AM

Uh oh dafonz, you disagree with someone. That must mean you are making it up!

Mr.HappySilp 04-07-2011 01:07 AM

I don't usually eat breakfast. Get up around 7:30am and won't eat till around 1pm to 2pm for lunch. I do have coffee in between though.

Not very healthy though.

GB 04-07-2011 11:00 AM

I start off the day with a bowl of cereal, yogurt, and a grapefruit.

so you a link of a guy whos in shape and doesnt eat breakfast sometimes, big deal i could prolly find thousands of athletes in better shape who eat breakfast (or two) every single day.

i dunno about you but i play sports and workout, and when i wake up in the morning im starving. Somehow i think starving myself till lunchtime is not good for muscle developement and recovery.

Umm did you read his link? He NEVER eats breakfast and only eats 8 hours in a day, while fasts the other 16 hours.

Also studies show fasted training (i.e. training on an empty stomach) can be more beneficial than training in a fed state: http://www.springerlink.com/content/w8712615714k8150/
