Sony Confirms Attack on PlayStation Network

Statement from Sony:

Quote:
An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th.
Anonymous has taken full responsibility on the attack:

Quote:
We have attacked Sony in order to send a message that gamers worldwide have certain rights, and are not merely sources of income. Your temporary inconveniences have allowed a lasting impact to be made upon Sony, and other corporations that are tempted to follow in the pursuit of sacrificing service to customers in exchange for larger profits. Although you may have been unable to game for a day, this event will likely provide hundreds of hours of such in the future. Anonymous are gamers too. And we support the rights of people worldwide, and will stand up for the right of having access to the device that you BOUGHT.

Fucking cunts

If you want to "have access" to something, don't fucking buy a PS3, buy a computer.

EDIT: Hmm, saw this on the "official" anon site
Quote:
Sony's Playstation Network, its online service for Playstation 3 and its Playstation Portable consoles, suffered from a major outage today; which is on going as of this writting. According to Son'ys blog, the interruption in service may last into the long weekend - for at least another "full day or two". Sony released a statement through its EU blog, saying that the network outage may be a result of "targeted behaviour by an outside party", brining in the possibility of cyberattacks. Adding to the confusion is the fact that the message has since been removed.

While it could be the case that other Anons have acted by themselves AnonOps wa not related to this incident and takes no responsiblity for it. A more likely explination is that Sony is taking advantage of Anonymous' previous ill-will towards the company to distract users from the fact the outage is accutally an internal problem with the companies servers.

TL : DR

Sony is incompetent.
Also the story you linked to was updated , as the quote was from the first attack they did a while ago.

So SOMEONE is causing this, just not the main group which threatened to.

People who whine about buying a device and not having "access" to it are retarded. If you want "access" to something, then don't buy that device. How hard is that to understand?

Most of them are just bitches who want to pirate games and install hax so they can cheat in MP.

I dont know too much about this but isn't the playstation network an added bonus to all ps3 owners? You PAID for the system but the network is something that Sony does for their customers individually? Last I heard you didn't have to pay to access the network... unless all that has changed

Though I'm not about to bitch and complain about how it's been down or how I don't have "Access" to my PS3. I will say one thing

When I was faced with the decision of buying a 360 or a PS3 two things came to mind:
1) I was able to, out of the box, install and run Linux on my PS3 without any hassle (YDL even had a distro designed for the PS3), whereas the 360 has XBMC

2) Racing Games (GT5 for the PS3... Forza for 360)

In fact, scratch out point 2, because point 1 was the deal maker for me. I wasn't keen on hacking my machine, or pulling crazy stunts with it. The inclusion of "OtherOS" meant I could do away with a media computer in my Living room, using VLC on Linux to stream content directly from my network, regardless of format.

But probably the thing I enjoyed the most about having the little penguin on my PS3 was that I could install emulators and play my classic games on the big screen. (I know I can do this on a computer, but I really don't have any to spare, and I wasn't about to go out and buy one JUST to have it take up more space in the living room). It was fantastic. I played Super Mario on a TV for the first time ever since my SNES broke down in Grade 4.

Fast forward to 2010, Sony "deletes" the otherOS feature.
I decided to put off the update for a long time, just so I can continue doing what I wanted to do, on a feature included in the console when I bought it but will be meticulously taken away.

When GT5 came out and I was forced to do the update, I felt ripped off. I genuinely did. It's like buying a legit copy of Windows from Microsoft, and then sometime down the line they decide that you can only use the install once and only once, and that you cannot ever reinstall your own computer, on the same hardware (ie: a reformat).

I know that the OtherOS feature may not have been important to other people at all, but it was something that made me spend the extra 200 dollars at the PS3 launch to get one, and to wait the extra year for a PS3.

Although I support system openness, I don't support any kind of criminal activity.

Hacking PSN is basically a virtual vandalism. And just because you are capable of doing something, doesn't mean it gives you the right to do so. These "anon" are no different to terrorists.

I get what you are saying about not being douche bags, but when "anon" knocks down 2 towers, kills 3000 people and fights a 10 year war against the US army I will consider them terrorists. Its a fucking game not bank info or sensitive government files. They are assholes, but terrorists?? Give me a break

When Sony forced the cinavia update on us, thats when they went too far. I bought the console because it doubled as a "play-all media" system. IDC if you think pirating movies, or music is bad, Sony should fuck off and stop hampering the system. I can live without PSN for a couple days for Sony to know what a bunch of tards they are.

I'm neutral to this. I don't play any Sony games...nor do I use the PlayStation. And I usually like what anon does. No clue why they attacked sony though.. I'll go look it up.

Edit: Ok, Yeah, sorry to say but, I support them on this.

At its most basic root, terrorism means "those violent acts which are intended to create fear (terror)".

Hacking PSN fits neither (although it probably did create some fear in some hardcore gamers who really need to get lives anyway).

Just because the term has been abused, over-used, and just outright misused by governments and media, especially since 9/11, doesn't mean it applies here.

They are creating fear for Sony, the fear of financial loss.

The question is if you guy something can you do what ever you want with it? Sony sued the person behind the jail break so you could install any OS on it. The case was settled out of court. Annon was upset about the lawsuit.

I believe if I buy something I should be able to do what ever I want with it.

I kind of agree. Half the reason I bought a PS3 was to do away with all my DVD and BluRay discs so I could have everything on an external HD. Now with their Cinavia system half my movies no longer work, even ones I bought and ripped myself. Total bullshit.
