Need help with Mobilicity compatible phones
 

So I've been using Fido's pay-as-you-go thing for a good while now and I decided I'm going to get a real phone plan. Mobilicity caught my attention because of their $25 unlimited talk & text plan, and if you buy a whole year it's only $199.99, plus tax and dividing that by a year it works out to be around $18 per month. Anyways, I visited a Mobilicity store yesterday and figured out that they use AWS frequency or something and that not all phones are compatible with that. I was interested in getting a BlackBerry Bold 9780 but only using it for talk/text and wifi at home, so no data plan. Mobilicity said that the 9780 would only work if it was one from Mobilicity/Wind Mobile/T-Mobile, but I was wondering if say for instance a Rogers/Fido 9780 unlocked would work with Mobilicity just for their talk and text.

dont get mobilicity. its unreliable as fuck. ive been using it for a few months now. you dont get signal in busy places and yeah you get really bad signal and reception. im only using it because my bill is next to free. switching back to fido soon.
but i guess you can try it out for a month.

Yeah... I've heard mixed things. Which area's do you live around, and how's the coverage in let's say for instance Metrotown? I'm considering it because if I buy a full year it's pretty cheap and my pay-as-you-go isn't working out anymore.

metro town is crap.
no2 & no3 rd in richmond is crap and half the time i dont get signal there at all..
you get no reception in canada lines :(
but yeah like i said, try it out for a month. if you can live with it then get it, if the reception is absolutely horrid then dont.

To answer the op-

You can't use a Rogers unlocked phone as the big three and their discount brands use bands different from AWS. You would need to stick with Wind/Mobilicity/T-Mo

Mobilicity has been hit & miss, you should consider joining Wind Mobile instead. It has much better reception.

GSMarena lists the 9780 that works with Mobilicity. So if I bought a 9780 that came from Rogers but is unlocked I still can't use it with Mobilicity?

No I believe it has to be factory unlocked. IIRC, Rogers has locked the AWS bands in their offering. Take this with a grain of salt because it was read during the same research you're doing now. I think it has come up here in the Mobilicity discussions as well.

There are several phones which are unlockable but are not AWS. AWS means 1700/2100 frequencies. Robellus doesn't use those frequencies, so no phones from them will have them. You must buy an AWS phone either from those companies or from an outside company.

As people have mentioned, mobilicity licks balls. I work DT and there's a dead zone literally on my block. Wind has no problems, only Mobilicity does. I've had a couple coworkers switch to Wind because of this. I was tempted to change, but...seriously. It's ridiculous.

If you don't have the BB now then just buy one from Mobilicity/Wind Mobile/T-Mobile, all 3 have them and good part is that if u don't like Mobilicity, and you want to switch back to fido, the BB will work there aswell.

As for reception, it not bad in GVA, you get reception, but the thing thats pissing me off is that if you go deep into Richmond, its CDN Roaming, you go to Delta, its CDN Roaming, UBC is CDN Roaming etc......

Sure you do get reception in areas that their so called coverage map covers but when you actually go to those places your bars drop completely. Imo the phones for AWS aren't bad since their more reliable in terms of unlocking and using for other providers.

Btw folks in Richmond No2/No3 road you will be suffering signal loss due to the fact of two towers that you are in between which is resulting the signal drop. I asked them to correct the problem and it still hasn't been looked into.

if you get the phones from Robelus to use it on Wind/Mobi, it would only work in 2G mode if any...

only Wind/T-Mo and Mobi phones are compatible with each other.
