if that's the case it would take well over 10 years to pay off...

The Package B @ MSRP $37,XXX would be a good choice.

Having driven a 3G Prius extensively from Kelowna to Trail and back, I would probably lean towards a TDI. The Prius is fairly quiet and economical, WHEN YOU ARE NOT TRYING TO DRIVE UP A HWY WITH HILLS. Trying to pass lorries on a single lane hwy (Hwy33) is scary as S*IT with this thing, because it absolutely lacks power. BTW, the engine is fairly harsh when you're going pedal to the metal.
I have test driven the CT, and the noise insulation is definitely better, but it can only do so much once you're doing full throttle up a slope. Try taking one for a test drive at Port Moody Lexus, and go up one of the hilly roads (i.e. Herritage Mtn, Westwood Plateau, or even up SFU) to give you an idea to see if the performance is acceptable. A TDI will not have the same issues with a fully loaded car climbing up a hill.

BTW, the best deal I can find on the CT was $300 off and no doc fees at Regency Lexus.
I haven't bothered with a A3 TDI, because a Golf TDI has a newer chassis and has better interior appointments and sound insulation(!). It also has a much better NAV (if you buy a RNS510 used.. the Audi MMI thing is a joke on the A3).
The Golf TDI Highline is $4k cheaper and comes with real leather (Audi uses very disgraceful looking leatherette. The CT's 'Nu..smth' Leatherette is much much better)

BTW, you can get a fully loaded Prius V for the price of a base CT. The Prius has a panaromic sunroof with a solar panel that powers up the interior fans (I think this was first introduced on the A8's ?
It also has every single tech feature you can dream of. The only thing that it lacks is a giant Lexus badge.

hey too_slow, hows the vdub reliability? i see you own quite a few.
i wanna get a golf tdi, but many of my friends own vw's from all years, and they have had all kinds of problems

For typical driving, you'll rarely run into to red zone. Extended hill climbs will deplete the battery. You'll be running on all internal combustion once that happens. Plus, some of those horses will be diverted to sustaining/charging the battery.
The Coquilhalla definitely eats up the battery on those long, steep sections, but I can usually maintain 100km/h after the charge is used up. The key to (extended) hill climbing the Prius is understanding the way the system works, and planning ahead. As long as you have some charge, that will give you the extra torque you need to pass slow semis.

The only 'issue' I had was with a broken thermostat on the 16V (this car was family owned since brand new, everything else was 2nd hand.)
Mind you, the VW's that I've owned are pretty 'simple' in terms of electronics. Most of the horror stories are with newer Passats and Tourags, so really YMMV.
TDi's are fairly robust. However, there is a risk that if you use subpar diesel, your HPFP (hey, it's not only a problem with bmws!) will explode and your entire fuel system will need to be replaced.
Presto: You can only plan your route so much if you drive on Hwy 33 (think Big White, but even further.) The entire drive is single-lane uphill for the most part.
