Highway gas mileage is irrelevant?
I frequently commute between Vancouver & Abbotsford (and beyond), as well as 99/I-5 and I get the advertised highway rating for my car. With the current construction speed limits I'm driving slower and actually exceeding the rating on the #1.
With the current gas prices this is hardly irrelevant to my budget.

Slightly off topic here, but the other day saw and heard a 2012 Shelby GT500 blew by me. Easily one of the best sounding car out there right now from the factory.
Dropped by Ford dealer right away and sticker is only around $58,000, what a bargain for 540hp and a absolutely glorious exhaust.

People are probably just afraid of the torque that a high displacement V8 puts out.
They don't wanna break thier tiny honger wrists trying to hold on 
Nothing more satisfying than barely touching the throttle at a low RPM up a hill, and still passing a guy next to you revving the piss out of his motor.
I don't think I'll ever go back to a 4 Cylinder. Unless it's turbocharged. but still.
