| Day old bumper damaged, ICBC question?
Alright so I just had the front bumper redone on my car from a crack that appeared from a shipping job.
The bumper was mounted onto the car, still with a tiny bit of overspray that needs to be touched up, I left the bodyshop, went to 7-11 and parked.
I come back outside of 7-11 to watch the person parked infront of me, put the car into reverse, slam into the front of my car.
I run over and tell the guy he just hit the car, he proceeds to get out, tell me there is no damage, gets in and drives off without saying a word. There is now a gap that has opened up on the bumper, and the paint is obviously scrubbed on my bumper.
I claimed it on the spot to ICBC and reported his car, however the main question I have; is when I go to the claim center do I need the front license plate mounted? It wasn't mounted at the time just because the bumper was honestly 30 minutes old and I wanted to leave. I thought having it in front windshield for the day would be okay?

Wost case just zap ur plate to a area near the front. Then you can say atleast its mounted.
Would this be considered hit and run?? Driver did get out but since he left and the other party isnt happy with the outcome. What would ICBC do?

Call ICBC
When I got Hit and Runned they were able to track down the driver from the imprint his plate left in my bumper. :P

No, the front license plate does not need to be mounted.
I'd throw it in the windshield just to be on the safe side... but it shouldn't be an issue.

Seriously, good on you for reporting him. People in Vancouver need to stop parking by feel.

Report it as a hit and run. Also call the police and report it to them. You should have done that the minute the other guy took off. You will need a police file # before ICBC considers this a hit and run.
If it's hit and run and the other driver is never located, you are responsible for paying your collision deductible or $750, which ever is less. If the other driver is located and ICBC finds fault, then you don't pay anything.

Hmmmm...lets throw a foot log piece of metal with sharp edges all around, on the dash of my car. That way it can slide along the dash in a turn or sudden stop...or become airbourne inside the car in a crash. That seems like a great idea...plus it's a $196 VT for having an obstructed plate or a $138 one for not having it securely mounted. Hvaing it in the windshield for a second is a bad idea...let alone an entire day. Why tempt injury and tickets? As far as the ICBC reporting goes, it's a hit and run, punishable by arrest in BC and big fines too. Go report the P***k who hit your nice car.

But seriously though. When was the last time anyone was ever actually charged and convicted of hit and run? Let's face it, that rarely happens. It's either too difficult to prove the driver, Crown won't proceed with charges, cops too busy (or lazy) to investigate minor hit and run with no injury, yaddee yaddee yadda. Am I wrong?

I think he meant going to ICBC with no plate is not a problem, but you should always have a front plate on a vehicle or risk getting a ticket.

Am I wrong? | You can charge the registered owner with the H&R under the MV Act. You do not have to prove the driver, however interviewing the owner as part of the investigational process usually produces results. When you have an option of charging under the MV Act or Criminal Code sometimes the owner will decide to admit to the offence for a VT instead of a criminal charge.

Thank you for all responses,
Yes I did get his plate number, and I did claim it on the spot to ICBC. Driver didn't cooperate and was rather rude and an asshole when I told him he damaged my car. At the time, it didn't appear like I needed to call the police, I didn't think they'd do anything anyways; although the police station is in visual range from the very spot that this had happened at.
And zulutango, I dont drive without a front plate, and I don't keep it on my window. This day was the only exception due to the fact that the plate bracket had not been screwed onto the bumper because it was virtually only 2 or so hours old. The shop was closing and was already irritated with me pointing out tiny flaws in the paint work, so I threw the plate in the window and left.
This post was just to make sure that ICBC wont invalidate the claim for not having the plate fastened to the bumper at the time of the incident. I'm not driving the car till the day of the claim inspection as I dont want to do something by accident and ruin the process.
