Apple announces iMessage
 

So today apple annouced their version of bbm, it will be released in the fall with iOS 5 and be the exact same as bbm: encrpyted,picture and video messages, send/received notification,groups!

No way.

People saying iMessage is a BBM killer are talking out of their ass. It could be a total flunk. It's the first time they have done something like this, and chances are, they aren't going to get it right the first time around. Not to mention, no one has actually used it yet. BBM has been proven, and iMessage has nothing but fanboys backing it as of right now.

Blackberry also has other strengths the iPhone doesnt have. BB is still sticking around for a while IMO.

I think RIM is definately on the decline, but who knows.

BB still has a good 2 to 3 years left in the north american market as the one or two trick pony that it will always be thanks to the lack of forward thinkers running RIM. IMO iMessage isn't going to kill BB though, maybe when iphone has a more tactile keyboard, because I love the one on the BBs nowadays...

Rim has almost fallen to half of their 52wk high, it's just a matter of weeks, but their overall downfall can't be blamed on iOS alone.

What are some of the strengths of RIM other than the Messenger and keyboard? I think encryption/security is one of them as well?

Encryption and security is definitely one.

Most people prefer the way it handles emails as well. I'm not just talking about push, since other phones have that as well. BES for companies. Great data compression. I'm sure there are a few more i'm missing.

Personally, the one big thing that bugs me about the iPhone is the lack of customization for ring tones and notifications - and I'm not talking about putting your own ringtones on. It's about all the different profiles that a smartphone should have.

I have a few different profiles on my BB -
normal,
loud (when I'm doing chores around the house but need to be able to hear my phone),
vibrate,
phone calls only (so important calls go through, but I'm not distracted by messages/emails - usually when I'm asleep)
phones call + LED (my LED comes on so if I have a spare moment, I'll take a look at the message - this is what I usually have it on at work)

with my iPhone 4 (from work), I can flip the switch on the side, but that puts it on vibrate, and wakes me up in the middle of the night because it vibrates on the table. I can turn the ringer all the way down, but it's just at volume 1. If I walk away from my desk, and come back, the only way to check to see if I have a message that I missed while I was away is by unlocking the screen. That red LED is honestly a godsend for me.

Those are the reasons why I will still stick to to a BB.... BBM is great, I have tons of friends with BBM, and it's reliable and great - even overseas to my friends in the UK - but iMessage won't get me to switch my personal phone to iOS.

RIM is still the top dog in Canada anyway... but they are facing trouble

this is from a nokia story but the stats are still relevant; Apple is growing whereas Blackberry seems to have plateaued

and with the Playbook seemingly a failure? Blackberry really only has the Business/Corporate market but even there Symbian still edges it out


I dont think iOS will take a chunk @ all from the business/corporate use.. but it certainly seems like they're trying to head in that direction with secured messaging. but from what i understand there's a lot more to Corporate requirements than just that, a lot more.

BB has always been big for Corporate companies to use. I still think it will remain a big hit for bigger companies coz they have the software for it. To switch over is a costly thing.

My Uncle works as maintenance for ramada hotel downtown, he loves the BB.. he said its easier to use then the full screen touch phones coz at one time they time they tried to use new phones but didnt work out too well..

i guess as time progress and better integrated software, Apple could overtake Rim in the business world.

I agree with the LED feature, I like being able to tell if I have an email or msg just by looking at the phone if I'm across the room or whatever.

I think RIM just needs to add more flare to their phones, thats why everyone is jumping to droid/iphone, cause blackberries get boring after a while. Personally I think they were on the right track with the torch.

I'll admit that Im a blackberry user and I love bbm, but lately I've been super tempted to jump ship to android just because of the high degree of customization.

I'm starting to see a lot of my corporate customers email replies showing either an Android or iOS devices these days. Just a matter of time I guess.

i don't know if it has to do with the LED (which is very important imo), but ppl on whatsapp never ... take the messages seriously. not only is it sometimes unreliable, ppl choose not to reply on it like users on bbm. even bb users that have both only reply on bbm faster. i wonder where imessage fits in.

i completely agree with gars. the profile features are so lacking on the iphone, you'd think it'd be standard by now. when i go to bed, i either put it on silent w/ no vibrate, or turn off all the sounds except for the ringer so i can accept phone calls....

I use one of those docks - which a lot of people find useless. But with a blackberry - it automatically puts it into a clock mode - which works great as a bedside clock. As well, I have a setting - where when it's in the dock, it'll automatically put it into a "bedside mode" - where it will automatically have it in a certain profile. I have it set so from 11-7, it will be in phone calls only mode.

Basically, it means when I go to sleep, I just have to pop the phone on my dock, and it'll automatically silence my messages for the night - I don't have to change anything. People might say it only takes a few seconds but only, but you can't put a price on this convenience.

BBM, iMessage, Google Talk - all function the same (minus BBM's encryption which is a plus, but is it really necessary for what most people use it for?)

I don't think this is really a "BBM" killer but either way, the mass amounts of chat software being flooded in is really dumb in my opinion. All these messaging clients are replacements for text messaging...but what is the benefit? Group chats? Point being, these services are only useful if the majority of your friends also have them, or else, what's the point? That's why text messaging is irreplaceable because no matter what, everyone has it and you're not restricted to whether or not someone is on the same platform as you.

Guys.. iMessage is encrpyted as well. Whatsapp has a huge following now in terms of popularity and it's cross platform.

I have used BBies for quite some time, I started with the old 8700. And I loved that thing. Then I went from the Pearl... which sucked, to the Bold 9000, which was pretty good for its time, until it sucked, then the Torch.

Although BBies data compression is wikked, I used to be able to bbim on week long trips in the states for under a buck. I find that I never go over my 2gb data with my iPhone.

I agree with ilvtofu, RIM has no forward thinking management, all of their phones are lackluster. The performance, the extra's, the user friendliness, the screens, etc. etc. etc.

I was hoping the torch would be the phone to change my thoughts about BB but I gave it up. I'm hoping to give android a shot next. (although the features of the new bold seem pretty cool)

Even if iMessage was cross platform, I couldn't see it doing better than bbim. If bbim were cross platform, I don't think anyone would buy a BB

if thats not a bbm/blackberry fanboy then i dont know what is.
ive used bbm and whatsapp, and theres no major advantage that bbm has that is worth hanging onto a blackberry for.

ive used a iphone 3g, bb 9700, and nexus s, and asides from the keyboard, LED, and possibly calendar, the berry had nothing going for it.

at the end of the day i dont care which phone you use at all, but its plain to see that blackberrys are becoming (read: already are) a thing of the past.

Ya but if you're not using BBM, you cant make a t-shirt with your barcode on it and walk around in clubs hoping that girls will scan it.

If its from Apple, people will get it. doesnt matter if it better or worse then BBM

Why? it's only on one platform.
