They should totally have the offending player who threw a dirty hit be suspended for as long as the victim player is kept from playing the game.
Then maybe, In order to prevent call-up goons from taking out an opposing marquee player, assign a value from 1 to 10 for each player on every team (Hossa is worth a 10 to the Hawks. Doan is worth the same to the Yotes. Torres is worth, say, a 5 --- not that Torres is a goon per se.). Then if a dirty play happens, not only does the offending player stay out of the game till the injured player comes back, but a player from the offender's team of equal value to the injured player is also suspended. So playing dirty negatively affects your team and a specific teammate and so hopefully guilt will prevent dirty hits.
Okay, maybe that's kinda stupid. But having Keith suspended for as long as Daniel is injured makes sense to me. Same with Torres being suspended for as long as Hossa is injured.
And if the injured player is out indefinitely then it's tough luck for the offending player. An eye for an eye.

The playoffs are a different beast and it seems like open season to get revenge. The hit on Alfreddson is a great example. A star player, Alfie has already missed one game. Hagelin should be done. We don’t need no fancy Shanaban video stating why Hagelins was suspended. Hagelin – 7 games (equivalent to a playoff series) Reason - Conduct detrimental to league. Done. That is all you need to do. Why is it detrimental? Because an illegal check/hit took out a star player. Protect your assets, unless they do something like Weber did. Then you throw the book at them, like Goddell did to Rapesburger.
There is not debate that Torres will be suspended, it's a matter of how many games.

I haven't posted in here the last two games, because I knew the Canucks were going to lose both games, no matter what. Game 4 may be the last one this season, so I am going to get the flags out and cheer them on. The Canucks play well when their backs are up against the wall, so they may be back home for a game 5.
The team is what it is....... they are not a playoff team. The team, with the exception of a handful of players, has no heart or character. Skill alone cannot and will not win you the Stanley Cup. Not that the team has a whole lot of skill, either.
My wife, in 94, was a die hard Canuck fan. She was insane - screaming, pounding on tables, etc. Last year, she was like, meh. I asked her what happened. She just wasn't into the Canucks anymore. She liked the 94 team. Players like Linden, Captain Kirk, Greg Adams, Bure, Geoff Courtnall, Cliff Ronning, Dave Babych, Gino Odjick, etc. Character players........
I totally understand and feel the same way. This year's team; Malhotra I never understood, Kesler just turned into a rat. Schneider, Burrows, and.... that's about it. The rest of the team, just your run of the mill hockey players earning a living. The Sedins are not playoff players.
Don't get me wrong, the Canucks are still my home team and I will always root for them. Although it would be nice, I don't like the team that much.
