Both would want to be the number one goalie, if not in Vancouver, then somewhere else. Something has to give.

AzNightmare 04-20-2012 05:56 PM

Yeah, it's not even about the money any more. Both want to play as a starter, and not split 50/50 workload.

Split the games 50/50, imagine how rested they'd both be come playoffs? Giants did that a few years back with Slade and Sexsmith, until Slade's head got too big for his mask.

RiceIntegraRS 04-20-2012 06:08 PM

Yes Pens win!

Pens win!

So Canucks won't be scheduled for an early game now??

Preds win.

this isn't the WHL. starting goalies want to be the starting goalie every night. no NHL team has two goalies that have the skill of a starting goalie, but only play 41 games a year.

playing goalie is their passion, they didn't spend countless hours training to be what they are now just to get benched 50% of the time.

HonestTea 04-20-2012 06:36 PM

Damn..Preds have been looking pretty good!

First ones to advance to the second round!

SkinnyPupp 04-20-2012 06:40 PM

Crazy to see Detroit go out in the first round... Not shocking, but when you consider we all watched their dominance over the years, it's still weird

I'm not saying goalies WANT to do it, because I'm sure they certainly don't, especially come playoff time, but there are some teams this year that 2 goalies that are worthy of being #1's....

Elliot/Halak
Thomas/Rask
Quick/Bernier

the blues? bruins ? but I mean I do agree for the most part, those 2 situations are probably outliers considering elliot was a career backup until this season and rask is young.

^ was going to say Elliot just seemed to blossom this year. but how many of those goalies were signed while they were at the skill level they are now. i don't know but i bet if they keep up their skill they won't stay to be resigned as a back up when their contact ends.

N.V.M. 04-20-2012 06:55 PM

5 pm from NHL. they would know.

HonestTea 04-20-2012 07:01 PM

spideyv2 04-20-2012 07:05 PM

Halak signed a 4-year $15-mill contract with St.Louis in 2010 and Elliot just signed a 2-year extension for $3.6-mill....So St.Louis is basically spending $5.5-mill/year on 2 solid goalies.

TjAlmeida 04-20-2012 07:13 PM

guess see how elliot goes. could just be having a solid year and will fall apart next year. i know halak signed semi long term after Montreal.

GrapeDrink 04-20-2012 07:16 PM

yeah that is basically the difference, if the goalies can put egos in check, the blues win big here(assuming elliots season isnt fluke), they get 2 goalies for the price of one really good goalie, where as in vancouvers situation you are looking at 9-10 mil to keep lu and corey, I just don't think that is feasible in a salary system, you are sacrificing a lot of potential depth cap.

Hondaracer 04-20-2012 07:22 PM

Hella wouldn't have Crosby on my team

I really think Elliot signing with the Blues is a win for both sides....He'll split time Halak while Hitchcock's defensive style of play will inflate his stats....2 years later and he'll get a fat contract, which he arguably may not truly be worth....That said, Elliot was playing great before Hitchcock took over and he looked well on his way to stealing the #1 spot from Halak...
