That's nuts

Poor Torres - what a fucking joke. Had Hossa hit Torres he wouldn't have gotten shit. Maybe a $2500 fine. :fuckthatshit:

gloors 04-21-2012 08:44 AM

Think 25 games is waaaay to much even tho he's a repeat offender... Prolly just did that to makeup for all the missed shit Shanban fucked up on

RacingMetro92 04-21-2012 08:45 AM

There's the precedent for a similar hit. If anyone gets 25 or less for something like that then Torres has a right to be pissed for getting that much. I don't know if this hit was similar to the Rome hit last year but 25 is A LOT for a hit that didn't seem as bad as some others.

Bad time to set an example. 2500 to 25 games in 10 days.

rsx 04-21-2012 08:51 AM

What a joke, 25 games? There doesn't seem to be any logic behind these punishments

SkinnyPupp 04-21-2012 08:52 AM

25 games for Torres

5 games or Keith

lol the NHL is such a joke. The varying degrees of dicipline from player to player is so inconsistent its laughable.

bballguy 04-21-2012 08:56 AM

Wow, I thought the NBA was run by idiots, but the NHL definitely isn't looking any better right now......

RRxtar 04-21-2012 08:59 AM

well now the 'average suspension length' in the playoffs has gone up to 5 games instead of under 2. the league looks better on paper now. lol

pastarocket 04-21-2012 09:19 AM

Shanahan really dropped the hammer on Torres. As much as I agree that the NHL is inconsistent in its disciplinary action on players, I think that the twenty five game suspension is the right decision.

If the league is serious about protecting players and making player safety a priority, maybe a big suspension is one of the ways to deter the players from making hits like that nasty one on Hossa:

Torres' rap sheet of nasty hits:

MarkyMark 04-21-2012 09:27 AM

It's not in the right direction because as soon as a player of any relevance does that same hit they will get 5 or less. The only people who should be worried are players like Matt Cooke who's probably a hit like that away from getting the same deal.

pastarocket 04-21-2012 09:37 AM

Here's a thought. Back in the day, it was rare to see star players like Gretzky receive nasty hits, blindside hits to the head etc. Why?

One of the reasons is because the NHL did not have the instigator rule.
What if the league changed the penalties for the instigator rule or removed the rule?

If any player were to make an illegal hit on other player, star player or 4th line guy, you would have the enforcers, the goons, stand up for their team mate and fight the player.

Bottom line: Other players would make players who make these illegal hits accountable for their actions.

You may see less of these players making illegal hits on other players because you would know that the other team's enforcer, the goon, would punish you for the hit.

Enforcers like Dave Semenko or Marty McSorley acted as a big deterrent to players who may have wanted to make a big hit to Gretzky because they knew those guys would fight the opposing player.

I really want to see the NHL do something meaningful to ensure player safety. It's horrible to see any player, whether a star player, or the 4th line plumber, get seriously hurt by an illegal hit.

Here is Rule 46 about the instigator rule for a player starting a fight:

Official Rules - Rule 46: Fighting - NHL.com - Rules

This is from the NHL rulebook: A player who is deemed to be both the instigator and aggressor of an altercation shall be assessed an instigating minor penalty, a major penalty for fighting, a ten-minute misconduct (instigator) and a game misconduct penalty (aggressor).

GrapeDrink 04-21-2012 09:44 AM

25 seems like a bit much for that hit, but this obviously isn't based on the hit alone, this is raffi fucking torres and I don't mean cause he isn't a superstar, hes a dirty repeat offender, how many times has he been suspended for dirty hits now? like 4? 5?

RRxtar 04-21-2012 09:44 AM

the instigator argument always just ends up going around in circles.

Not really racist! 04-21-2012 10:00 AM

holy fuck 25 games

:fulloffuck:

now i wonder what would happen if roles were reversed

spoon.ek9 04-21-2012 10:27 AM

I knew they would make an example out of torres. It was just the perfect scenario for Shanahan and company: repeat offender, non-star player, and a star player is injured on the hit.

spideyv2 04-21-2012 10:35 AM

25 games is a joke

Vansterdam 04-21-2012 10:39 AM

wow 25 i was thinking 7-8 max
