Parise signed for another year with NJ.

Quote:

NEWARK, N.J. -- The New Jersey Devils have reached an agreement with high-scoring left-winger Zach Parise on a one-year, $6M contract.

In making the announcement late Friday afternoon, Devils president and general manager Lou Lamoriello said the two sides were continuing to work on a multi-year deal.

The Devils had filed for arbitration with Parise in June. He would have become an unrestricted free agent in 2012 had he not reached a new deal.

Parise earned US$5 million last season, a year in which he was limited to 13 games and three goals by a knee injury that required surgery. He had been the catalyst of the Devils' offence the previous four seasons, scoring 146 goals.

Good, hope parise bolt else where with kovalchuk being the "franchise" in jersey now.

Thrasher franchise value just doubled or tripled... after moving to winnipeg

b0unce. [?] 07-29-2011 03:08 PM

there's always next year! LOL

Laundry 07-29-2011 03:14 PM

Parise is gonna be a UFA next year, no longer a RFA...

Kesler-Parise?

Gumby 07-29-2011 03:27 PM

And in other news, Brent Sopel is heading to Russia to play hockey for the next 2 years. :)

Quite surprising, to be honest. He's definitely good enough to be on the 3rd D pairing at the very least...

shawn79 07-29-2011 03:34 PM

sopel recored 37pts and 42 pts as a canucks in 02 03 04 :)

parise kesler and miller are the reason why USA were in the 2010 gold medal game

i can't believe they only got him to commit to only one year. next summer should be interesting!

PornMaster 07-29-2011 03:51 PM

could be a sj move where they sign setoguchi and trade his ass LOL

Parise just came off major knee surgery so I assume NJ wants to make sure he can play at the level before the injury before committing long term.

$6m for a healthy parise is a great deal.

Kovalev also signed in the KHL for 2 years. Best of luck to him.

Other way around. Parise got one on the Devils by signing a contract that makes him a UFA in his 7th NHL season. No team wants their young stars to be UFAs on the first years they reach 7 or 27 because if they sign elsewhere as a UFA and they get nothing for him, they will have gotten the absolute minimum return for their investment.

thats kinda what i was going for. i just worded very poorly. the article still says they are talking long term so you never know.

Reminder that in the 2012/2013 season, there may be a lockout so that's why the Devils haven't committed Parise into long terms

That would be a hella stupid reason. Paying Parise $6m for a year of doing nothing is way better than losing him to free agency for nothing after all the development they've put into him. Stars don't grow on trees. Letting Parise walk could cost someone their job.

...well, maybe not Lamorello since he probably owns the souls of everyone in New Jersey. I'm guessing if they tried to fire him, a swarm of locusts would come out of his mouth and eat everyone's faces.

...because he looks like he's probably Satan.

...Ohhhhhhhh NJ Devils...

Yup. He could've gotten more from his arbitration hearing, but he wanted a longer term and filing for arbitration every summer is a hassle.

its all about the potential and nothing to do with what he didnt do the previous season...if crosby was a ufa, would you sign him to contract based on a shortened season and concussion? hell i would take that gamble

UFO 07-30-2011 11:42 AM

I'm not 100% on this, but I do not believe players get paid in the event of a strike/lockout, so that is irrelevant to the 1 yr term on Parise's deal. Basically he signed the 1 yr term to avoid an arbitration hearing. NJ filed for arbitration so teams cannot give him an offer sheet as a current RFA. With arbitration it is essentially Parise telling the mediator how awesome he is and asking for fair market value, and the team telling the mediator why they do not think he is worth as much as he is asking for, basically mudslinging on both sides which has the potential to hurt the team-player relationship depending on how far each party decides to take it.

Hansen's deal being frontloaded like that is kind of weird, it's not an obvious attempt to circumvent the cap like paying Airhoff $10M for 2011-12, especially if anybody is anticipating a 25% salary cut across the board like what happened with the last CBA strike/lockout. With how some of the recent contracts have been gifted out, this would not be a surprise to me at all. Hopefully Hansen can continue to improve on his performance and come year 2 and 3, the $1.3M he is set to earn will make it seem like an absolute steal (like Burrows' current deal, and to a lesser extent Kesler's current deal).

Not as surprising as Sopel's decision to play in the KHL, since Kovalev is Russian!
