These guys play hockey all their lives, in many cases head and shoulders above people their own age talent wise, dreaming of becoming the next Wayne Gretzky. Then they get to Junior and are playing against older guys and suddenly they're on the 4th line struggling for minutes. Coach says, "want more ice time, you gotta fight."
Dreams crushed. Guy with skills turns meathead because that's all he thinks he's good for.
Rypien is a great example, you can tell he had pure offensive skills with some of the goals he scored. His dad was a Golden Glove boxer... doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out he could probably throw them too.
That would mess with a lot of people's psyche. Like I said, some are cut out for it, others aren't.

George Parros is a perfect example of a guy who had to change his style and become an enforcer so he could make the NHL.
Many of these enforcer types didn't start off as these kinds of players, but instead were ripping it up in all levels as they moved up. Those other skills didn't quite translate to NHL success, so they have to change their style. Wade Belak was the 12th overall pick in his draft year. He didn't get to that position for his fighting skills, but his other skills. However those skills wouldn't keep him in the NHL, so he had to change his style.
Although George Parros changed his style to become an enforcer so he could stay in NHL, the guy had a Economics degree from Princeton University. Quote:
But does that Ivy League degree mean that if he wasn’t playing hockey, he would he be wearing a suit and tie on Wall Street – possibly as the world’s most intimidating stock broker?
“You know what? Everybody asks me that, but I’ve never really thought of anything except playing hockey,” said the 28-year old.
“It’s kind of what I was trained for, but I never applied for any jobs or anything like that. Hockey was always my favorite sport and something I wanted to do for as long as I can remember.”
Even with a deep passion and commitment to the game, Parros hit a few bumps in the road when attempting to continue his career after college. Playing in his first professional season with the American Hockey League’s Manchester Monarchs, he struggled with the realization that he would have to adjust his game to suit a new style of play.
Parros readily admits that he began to lose his feel for the game upon receiving reduced ice time, and realized his offensive abilities weren’t going to punch his ticket onto an NHL roster. Instead, he adjusted on the fly and began using his large frame to fill the role of an enforcer for Manchester.
“It was tough going from Princeton, where I played lots of minutes and was an important part of the offense, to being an enforcer,” said Parros.
“But that’s fine, because it’s what got my foot in the door. I’m happy to fill my role now, but it was certainly an adjustment. Sometimes it’s tough to accept a new role at the beginning, but it got me where I am.” |

When someone sees a tweet like this from a millionaire who reitred young by society's standards (Might still be playing in the KHL), it makes people not really feel sorry for them. While it makes them sound self-righteous, you often hear about athletes having an extremely difficult time coping with "not being in the dressing room, with the boys, in the spotlight." When I see that quote from Sopel, at first I think, "cry me a river" go travel the world with the amount of money you have...but then I relalize, they probably need some sort of exit strategy for athletes who retire so they can cope with a new life. We all know that not every retired NHL'er is going to end up on the TSN Panel.
With that being said, more has to be done by the NHLPA and the agents. So when the next collective bargaining agreement has to be signed, maybe things such as mental health and exit strategies for retirement are on the agenda and not just the salary cap. The NHL is a business for profit, it's the hockey players who need to demand changes from their agents and union.
All we know is that 3 current NHL players died this year. They happened to fight in their careers. Correlation does not mean causation.

whos he gonna play with though? Giroux and JVR?
if he gets injured it will most likely be for an extended stretch as well
i dunno it's a risky pick early on
On that note, does anyone know any site like yahoo etc. that does just a straight points pool? not fantasy?
