UPDATE: Latest reports have 45 people on board the Yak-42 plane including eight crew, with 43 now reported dead. Multiple reports identify player Alexander Galimov as a survivor, but in critical condition. CBC News briefly but erroneously identified Canadian player Riley Armstrong (brother of Colby) as having been on board, but the player has himself confirmed on Twitter that he is in Canada, alive and well if badly shaken. While reporting of such details is chaotic at best and irresponsible at worst, the overarching story is clear enough. A tragic day.
UPDATE from Peter Adler: Herewith the list of those who were aboard the Yak-42 plane that crashed Wednesday, killing the entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team of the KHL … Igor Kuperman just told me he just yesterday wished his best friend Igor Korolev a happy birthday …
Coaches: Brad McCrimmon, Igor Korolev, Alexander Karpovtsev, Nikolai Krivonosov, Jorma Valtonen.
Goalies: Stefan Liv, Alexander Vyukhin.
Defence: Pavel Tarkhanov, Karel Rachůnek, Robert Ditrich, Ruslan Salei, Karlis Skrastins, Michail Baladnin, Vitalij Anikeyenko, Marat Kalimulin, Jurij Urichev.
Forwards: Alexander Galimov, Daniil Sobchenko, Jan Marek, Ivan Tkachenko, Alexander Vasiunov, Gennady Churilov, Nikita Klyukin, Alexander Kalyanin, Sergei Ostapchuk, Pavol Demitra, Josef Vašíček, Artyom Jarchuk, Alexander Romanovskyi, Andrej Kiryukhin.
Crew: Andrei Solomentsev (captain), Igor Zhevelov (first officer), Sergei Zhuravlev, Elena Formatova, Nadezhda Maksomova, ? Muzacharov, ? Salin, ? Mayushkin, Alexander Sizov.
A bunch of the Sabres were gathered for an informal skate today when the news of the crash was broken to them, they were hit pretty hard as Vasicek was Vanek's brother in law and Boyes and Hecht were good friends with Demitra from their St. Louis days.
Gaborik also taking this really hard, was best friends with Demitra and Boogard (who died earlier this summer).

It’s horrible to consider — a plane crash wipes out an entire NHL team — but the league has thought about it nonetheless.
That’s why the league requires teams to have a $1-million (all figures US) insurance policy on each player, one of the provisos in the NHL bylaws made public over the weekend in court filings regarding the bankruptcy of the Phoenix Coyotes.
If a team is left with fewer than 14 players and one goaltender following some sort of catastrophe, the league sets in motion its Emergency Rehabilitation Plan.
First, the “disabled team” would be allowed to negotiate to buy players under contract from other teams, with payment coming from the insurance money.
If that didn’t fill out the roster, a draft would be held, much like an expansion draft. Teams could protect 10 players and one goalie.
The disabled team would be allowed to take no more than one player from each of the other teams. The price for each player is $1 million in insurance money.
Other league bylaws
• Any league member who has “wilfully breached” the league’s constitution, bylaws, rules or collective bargaining agreement can be fined $1 million.
• Team officials face a $150,000 fine for making “detrimental” comments regarding expansion.
• Team officials face a $250,000 fine for publicly disclosing the league’s position on collective bargaining with the players’ union.
• Teams face a $1-million fine for offering bonus money to players outside their contracts.
• Any member of a team who conspires to lose can be fined, suspended or expelled from the league.
• Betting on hockey by players, officials, team executives and league staff is prohibited.
scary moment in the world of hockey, hope this make NHL players rethink about going to the KHL

more or less Russia as a country needs to take a good look on their air safety traffic
QFT. The UK does not even allow Russian planes to enter their air space.

scary moment in the world of hockey, hope this make NHL players rethink about going to the KHL
A plane crash can happen anywhere, but what might cause some players to rethink the KHL is how they handle this situation.
In the NHL, all players contracts have to be insured, so that if anything does happen to the player in event of death or career ending injury, they or their family are payed out. Not sure if the KHL had insurance coverage as I don't believe there is a players union in the KHL and the league itself was facing some financial hardships with contracts not being payed and late paycheques.
The above and the Cherepanov incident where the arena did not have proper medical equipment or staff to save his life might cause players to reconsider the KHL, not a plane crash.
I have removed my Fail based on 7seven's explanation. So you should give him a "Thanks".
