-Roberto Luongo (1 game away from winning the Stanley Cup)

There is a better chance of a good goalie getting hot in the playoffs than a mediocre goalie getting hot.

Other than Thomas, Rinne, Lundquist and Price there isn't anyone else I would take over Luongo. These quality goaltenders don't grow on damn trees. I'm pissed off about Luongo's mental game just as much as the next person, but look at the goalies the Canucks have had in the past....DO NOT WANT Philly's problem!

I noticed McLean wasn't thrown in that mix.
I was still new to hockey back in the day, so I'm not 100% sure about McLean's play.
But besides the one season he came 1 game away from winning the cup, was he really the elite goalie everyone in vancouver talks about,
or is that hype?

I just looked up his stats on wiki... seemed like he was a pretty good goalie in the early 90s (before I started watching hockey)

So just asking, Kirk McLean better than Luongo all time?

RiceIntegraRS 06-21-2011 02:19 PM

Thomas almost lost his starting job to Rask last season so i wouldnt say he consistent yet.
Nashvilles defensive style makes Rinne alot better than he is
Price=Eastern conference version of Nashville
Lundqvist is probably top 5 but never will be better than the 5th best goalie in the league
Miller is probably the only goalie i may take over Luongo.

At this point, I don't think taking any goalie over Luongo is a factor.
We have one of the top (maybe inconsistent) goalies in the league right now.
So we're really just debating on consistency rather than actual performance.

Luongo has the capability of playing like an elite goaltender, and any of those other
goalies mentioned can shit the bed just the same on a different night. And while people
can look at consistency on a gamely basis, people can also look at it in a bigger picture,
which goalie will be consistent over 5 years vs. a goalie that's good one year, and horrible the next.

AV should have pulled Luongo after the 4th goal in the 8-1 Game 3,
Shades of Patrick Roy anyone?

MR_BIGGS 06-21-2011 02:46 PM

Oh ya definitely forgot Miller!

All I'm trying to say is that there just isn't that many elite goaltenders in the league. When Nonis built this team he stated he was building from the goal out. He got the Canucks a franchise goaltender and started his build from there. Gillis came in and basically just remixed Nonis' plan by replacing our D with more quicker puck moving dmen.

The Canucks play a very structured style. That bodes well for a positional goalie like Luongo. The Canucks have the ability to win close games vs good teams when they play this style. I hate to use injuries as in excuse, but the team we saw in games 1 and 2 weren't the same as the other games. Even game 5, I thought the Canucks weren't that great.

When they get away from playing this style, shit really hits the fan.

No. Complete opposite story. In Roy's case, he WANTED to be pulled but the coach kept him in anyways to humiliate him.

In addition to a goalie consultant, Lu should also get a therapist/counsellor to help him calm down and stay mentally stable. It's all mental with him. If that's fixed, he's just as good as any other goalie

I agree that it is all mental with him, now is keepin him in the net for 8 goals healthy? regardless on how much he wants to play?

Another example where AV failed.

I'd rather see Roberto sitting on the bench mad then be left in and have another team get in his head.

ummm nashville's defence doesn't make rinne looks better than he is. rinne is legitimately that good.
and imo, lundquist is still top 3 in my books. he's just on a shitty team.

McLean had a mediocre season in '94 (sub-0.500, I believe) but was fucking ridiculous in the playoffs.

He had a Vezina nomination early but was never an amazing goaltender. But then again, the Canucks weren't a very good team at the time...they just played beyond their pay grade.

Because he touched the cup.

It's considered bad luck to touch the cup before you've won it. Same goes with the NBA trophy I think.

So far I say yes by far. More heart, more clutch. If you compare their to runs to the finals well McLean didn't get embarrassed like Luongo. But I guess you can say that for the whole team. In 94 the nucks fought. They finished teams
off. If I counted right,

chance to eliminate other team 94 team 3 - 1 , 2011 team 4 - 7
facing elimination 94 team 5 - 1 , 2011 team 0 - 1

94 the canucks forced game 7 from being down 3 - 1, twice.
2011 the hawks forced game 7 from being down 3 - 1

Goals, Henrik = 3, Daniel = 9, Kesler = 7 for a total of 19
Bure had 16 himself and he scored that Game 7 2OT goal
Linden scored 12 and our only 2 goals in Game 7 of the finals. I think the kids these days would say he "lead the team like a boss". Kirk stopped 54 shots against the Rangers in game 1, stopped the Flames for 3 OTs in a row.
Maybe cause I was a kid when I watch all this but he's on youtube. here's one
Note he stays on his feet

I wished that team won. McLean was heroic. The team was heroic.
