Team not overly talented but everybody was firing on all cyclinders and playing well together. Made it through the regular season without raising too many eyebrows, caught some good bounces early on and moved into the finals and performed when it counted the most. The only difference of course was that they saw it all the way through to the end. Quote:

I don't think we can undersell McLean as an average goalie at best though. He was the first millionaire on the Canucks, made the all-star team twice, played on a team that was average, and also helped lead the Canucks to division titles against stronger but declining Calgary and Edmonton teams.
Lu is a much better goalie, but the parity in goaltenders these days is astounding. Goalies back in the day were not very good relatively speaking, Patrick Roy in his prime playing today's game would be average at best, IMO.

There were games in '94 that McLean literally stole such as Game 7 against Calgary and Game 1 against NYR. Lu stole Game 5 against SJ and possibly Game 1 against Boston, but they weren't as dramatic.
Yes there were times when McLean was very average, but he was a likeable guy. Lu has a huge ego and when he loses, he's not really accountable for his own mistakes. Also, I certainly can cut McLean some slack after 94 because one of his own teammates was sleeping with his wife. Posted via RS Mobile |

Toews got a good bounce on the late tying goal, but Lus stop on Sharp in OT was as huge as McLeans pad stack on Reichel. Not as dramatic looking, but arguably a harder save to make technically speaking

IMO the Canucks' wouldn't have made a run that far without Lu last year. | Why do people keep saying they disappeared? We generated chances that were just back stopped. I clearly remember Thomas stopping 3 break aways dead cold. Secondly, Canucks couldn't activate their defense because Lu would let in 2 or 3 goals mid-way through the game; in some cases within minutes of each other. But it's not like that even stopped the bleeding and we're left with 8 goal games.
For game 7, how many people felt that sinking feeling come 2nd period and team had to play themselves out of a 2 goal hole to even have a whiff of a chance of coming out on top?
It's exactly just like last night; it's deflating to your bench when you let one in right after the other just immediately right after your team gets one back and bailing you out.
Off course we're not privvy to locker room politics or personal opinions but I wonder if Lu's clout is starting to affect the team. The thing is, at this point how many scapegoats get thrown under the bus for this guy because AV is seriously running out of lambs for the slaughter: First it was Wellwood, then it was Hordichuck, then it was O'Brien. Like seriously? |

^^^Yesterday, I felt like they just could not build any momentum after scoring a goal. Philly would come back right after we scored with sustained pressure in our zone, where at times they answered right back. That can't be put solely on the goalie.

I mean goal 2 on the PP, we owned that entire team. 3rd Period was PP after PP after PP; but by then I think the 5th goal was asking for too much.
