In a memo that was obtained by Hockey Night In Canada’s Elliotte Friedman and revealed on the Hotstove segment on Saturday, the league reminded the 30 NHL teams on Friday that under rule 75.2 (i) a player can be penalized for abusive gestures. The rule reads, “any identifiable player who uses obscene, profane or abusive language or gestures directed at any person,” can be given a minor penalty. The memo goes on to advise the players that “abusive gestures include taunting an opponent following an on-ice altercation and that such actions, based upon the judgement of the on-ice officials, can be penalized with a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct and also may subject the offending player to supplementary discipline. We have advised our on-ice officials to be vigilant in the application of this already-existing rule.” |
