i was joking about the red line. i meant old style shoulder pads
you can see the difference in size of the shoulder pads allowing for a bigger area of contact to a hard plastic, the older style has a smaller area of contact and is softer

imo Helmets are almost an insignificant part of the concussion problem, the actual motion of your head slamming back and forth and your brain bouncing around in your skull is what causes the concussion, not the direct trauma.
Also they cant even grandfather in Visors, you think your going to convince players to wear the hideous messier project helmets? ya right
As for the shoulder pads, i dont see why players even feel the need to wear these big ass shoulder pads, i'm asuming its because once a few people do, you might as well to gain that extra element of protection and play on an even playing field?
personally i rock alot of pretty decent gear, but the highest end models of both lines of Bauer are too much for me, i feel like i'm wearing 10 sweaters under my gear when i have the huge shoulder pads on, i'm currently wearing an even lighter version of the supreme line like these:
and sometimes when i'm playing i feel like even taking those off [and yes i'm not in the NHL but I play a fairly high level hockey] because of the bulkiness
IMO what the biggest joke right now in terms of shoulder pads are, if you guys have noticed, is that all the players who rock the big huge shoulder pads that typically came with the hard plastic caps, the "solution" the NHL obviously found was just to give everyone those foam pads that attach over top of the original hard cap
yea.. because adding MORE material, regardless of the hardness is the answer right?

I play without a shoulder pads and still knocked a few guys out cold when my shoulder made contact with their chin as they skated in head down.
I think the bigger reason for all the head injuries is because it is more the norm to admit to having a concussion. Back then, players feared losing their jobs or being labled as a wimp by admitting to having a concussion. Look at Colby Armstrong. Perfect example of someone who feared losing his job due to injury. Players like Letang, Crosby, Pronger.... They don't have to fear losing their jobs due to injuries.
Look at the Nucks. If Volpatti or Weise had a concussion, do you think they would admit it and risk losing their jobs?

The shoulderpads angle is such a cop-out witch hunt of an argument. Regardless if you had old-time hockey shoulderpads, any 200lbs player barelling at his full speed will can/and will create concussion level-like contact.
It's about as silly as accusing Luongo wearing his pad flaps loose and with it saving goals he shouldn't be saving.

Take a fresh egg and dyno matt the outside of it. Shake the egg and I can bet you the egg yoke will be mashed up.

^^^ You are correct on that
But I should rewrite that...mouth guards are "supposed" to prevent concussions.
