Bieksa had 22 points all season and got 4.6 mill. Ehrhoff is clearly a better dman than Bieksa and is getting offered the same amount thaat Bieksa got. Ehrhoff had more than double the points Bieksa got and should be paid accordingly. That's why I was pissed that Bieksa got that 4.6 mill contract cause it meant Ehrhoff would have to get way more to stay.
You guys are calling Ehrhoff greedy but wouldn't you do the same if you were in his position? At this point it just seems like a slap in the face to lowball Ehrhoff with the same amount of money that a player with a much lower point total got.

How much cap space does Detroit have? Do they have enough to put in an offer for Ehrhoff?

I'm not saying that Ehrhoff deosn't deserve a huge pay raise but he was directly responsible for a lot of goals against. He's no where near as strong as Bieksa is defensively.

You guys are calling Ehrhoff greedy but wouldn't you do the same if you were in his position? At this point it just seems like a slap in the face to lowball Ehrhoff with the same amount of money that a player with a much lower point total got. | There is no doubt that given his 50pt season Ehrhoff is a $5mil to 5.5mil defenseman at least. However if that is his price to stay on the Canucks, I think letting him walk is the best thing.
I think in the back of Gillis' mind is that he needs to re-up Edler in a couple seasons and giving Ehrhoff that money and likely a NTC too (I'm sure Ehrhoff is looking for) will handcuff the Canucks with potentially 5 defensemen making $4mil + cap hit. Keep in mind Ballard also has a limited NTC and is signed till 2015.
Personally I'm not blaming or upset Ehrhoff wants a payday, its his prerogative as a UFA. Quote:

Ehrhoff the reason your a 50pt defencemen is cause you have 2 art ross trophy winners feeding you the puck on the 1st ranked power play while a selke winner is screening your shots. Dont get greedy. Posted via RS Mobile |

Erhoff is great, but you have to remember his 50pts came playing on the first unit on the best PP in the league. KB has hit the ~40 point mark doing the same thing in the past too.

you can't take ehrhoff's shot placement for granted. yes, he was on the #1 powerplay in the league but he's still a good offensive dman without them.

I can't believe Ballard hasn't asked for trade after the way he was treated this season by AV. It's kind of hard to get into a rhythm, build chemistry with partners and show what you can do when you're benched half the time. Sure he might have been overhyped coming out of Florida but there is no way he''s 8th Dman bad.

Ehrhoff's agent tells us he has not heard from the Canucks since their talk this morning. The leak caught him off guard.

regardless, i'd like to see ehrhoff back. he was one of the few defenceman that wasnt injured for a long period of time this season. in my eye he's pretty durable.

Erhoff will be missed, but I'd a suitable linemate for Kesler is more pressing in my opinion. Here's to hoping Ballard can escape the doghouse and the rest of the D can close up the 50pts lost by committee.
I do agree with the sentiments that having Torres resigned at a decent price would be a nice bonus for the bottom six depth. I thought he was one of the most consistent players in the playoffs.

The point that 7Seven made about Gills thinking he will have to re-up Edler's contract in a couple years is a good one.
This might be Ehrhoff's last chance at hitting a homerun with a contract, so you can't really blame the guy.
If you compare Ballards points per season to Ehrhoff's there not too far apart. Also take into consideration the teams they played on and the style.
Ballard vs Ehrhoff:
05/06 39 to 23
06/07 27 to 33
07/08 21 to 22
08/09 42 to 34
09/10 44 to 28
Both guys are pretty durable (Ballard played all 82 games in 4 of those 5 seasons). I've mentioned it before, I think Ballard will be motivated to have a better season. Let's hope AV lossens the reigns to let this guy play his game.

The good thing about not re-signing Ehrhoff is the fact that Ballard looks to be a shoe-in for a position now.
Ballard has come across as nothing but a class act & team player during this season with the Canucks so I honestly hope he gets rewarded with ice time.

I'd like Ehrhoff on the Canucks' but again, not at a price of +$5mil per cap hit, heres the Canucks D structure/cap hit:
*Bieska $4.6M (signed till 2016 NTC)
*Hamhius $4.5M (signed till 2016 NTC)
*Ballard $4.2M (signed till 2015 limited NTC)
*Edler $3.25M (will get at least $5+ in 2 seasons)
*Rome $750k
Now if you add Ehrhoff to that at +5mil per cap hit, long term, it just doesn't work having 5 defensemen locked in at over $4mil per cap hit. Some rumors have Ehrhoff looking for at least $5.5M from Vancouver.
Compare to other teams that are rumored to be looking to add a puck moving D
Detroit:
*Lidstrom $6M (signed till 2012)
*Stuart $3.75M (signed till 2012)
*Kronwall $3M (signed till 2012)
*Kindl $830K
Boston:
*Chara $6.9M (signed till 2018)
*Seidenberg $3.25M (signed till 2014)
*Ference $2.25M (signed till 2013)
*Boychuk $1.8M (signed till 2012)
*McQuaid $575K (signed till 2012)
Columbus:
*Tyutin $2.8M (signed till 2012)
*Russell $1.3M (signed till 2013)
As you can see, other teams needing a puck moving D are well in position to offer Ehrhoff even 6M a year cap hit long term, with their expiring D contracts and sub $4M defensemen.

The Canucks can easily afford to re-sign Air Hof at $5.5m but that would handcuff them in two years when Edler's up along with Burr and Manny.
I'd like to keep Ehrhoff but not at the risk of losing Edler down the road.

Maybe Ehrhoff will consider that we are that close and we can make 1 more push for the cup and he'll re-sign for maybe 4.8? A bit more than Bieksa's so he doesn't feel as bad

you'd think that when you're 1 game away from the biggest prize in hockey that it would no longer be about just the money. i'm not saying ehrhoff is being selfish here, but i bet he's also seeking a NTC on top of a $5mil+ salary.

i can understand that ehrhoff is just like any other player and is doing this from a business pov, but there are a lot of guys on our team who appear committed to this team and feel like we legitimately have a good shot to make it to the finals again and win this thing.
