The Bruins were invited to the White House to celebrate the sport like every other championship team at the United States Capitol. Its not like they were invited to the Democratic national convention.
It was a completely non political event and Thomas had to make it political. Its about representing your sport in front of your country, not making a political statement.
There is only 3 Americans on the bruins roster too.
Whats next, Thomas keeps his helmet on and doesn't stand for the Canadian anthem because hes an american?
To be fair, if you read his actual statement, he said it was NOT a political decision, he said he disagrees with how big government is and that it's both a democratic AND republican problem, he just thinks government is getting too large and I can see why events like this are just for Obama to smile and get some good press/make some jokes and maybe he doesn't like the B.S. of it all..........

Except when he said its not political, he was bullshitting. Thomas' statement
Quote:
"I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.
This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government.
Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.
The American Tea Party's mission statement
Quote:
The Tea Party Patriots' mission is to restore America's founding principles of Fiscal Responsibility, Constitutionally Limited Government and Free Markets.
The American Tea Party is here to reaffirm the traditions and principles upon which the nation was founded, including a free market approach to economic vitality and prosperity, self determination and self reliance, personal responsibility and accountability and a prudent approach to governance and the common good.
Stop the radical socialist direction in which our nation is headed.
We have no affiliation with any political party, just a devotion to saving our country and preserving our Liberty and Freedom for ourselves and future generations.
Thomas' totally turned this non-political event into a political event about himself and his Tea Party beliefs. He choose to take make a stand, which I agree is his right, however again there is a time and place for everything and this was not the right time or place.
If Thomas truly didn't want to go without turn it into a political gongshow, all he had to do was to ask the Bruins to say he wasn't feeling well and would be skipping the visit and the day and everyones attention would be focused on the Bruins' accomplishment as a team, not on Thomas' political views.
Ovie pulls himself from the ASG and weekend. I'm thinking either Vanek or Neal replace him.

Spoke with Caps GM George McPhee a few minutes ago. Says Ovechkin felt he would have been a distraction in Ottawa. (con't)

McPHee: ````When he came in this morning, he said, `I'm a suspended player and I don't deserve to be there.'''
I'm a Ovie fan, but yea I think he's pouting about his suspension, not a fan of this move. But I do know a lot of the players would rather take the week off instead of going to AS weekend.
Does anyone else think Ovi is being a huge bitch for not going to the ASG because he's suspended? Or is it just me..?
I understand Lidstrom and the others not going because they want to rest but Ovi is being a cry baby about this whole suspension thing.

I think he just wants time off, and as fsy82 mentioned, it's not like he really deserved to be there this year anyway. I read some article that said he was surprised he was even picked to go this year, but it was probably because of his star status.
If Ovi wanted time off he should have just manned up and said it like Lidstrom
I find it hard to use Ovi & Lidstrom in the same sentence.

Bush did the same thing, and Clinton did as well. Its not an Obama thing, its a White House thing. It should be an honor for any civilian to be invited into the White House, especially an American.
Its like if you got invited to a private tour of Parliament Hill but you said "no thanks, I hate Harper." except the prestige of the White House far outweighs the Canadian Parliament.
