For that reason, there may be a chance Schneider will be willing to stay in Vancouver. From a goalie's perspective, sure he may want to be a #1 goalie. But he should also understand the value of being a #1.5 goalie on a great team vs. being a #1 goalie on a bottom dwelling team. As much as any goalie wants to be a #1 in the NHL, I think they want to win and win the cup even more. Realistically, Schneider knows he won't be the type of goalie to only play 15-20 games a season if he sticks around here and he will continue to earn a greater role with the team. The only sticking point is what Schneider will want for a new contract as Lu's caphit and term are a bit of a handcuff.
Lu's NTC has an outclause in year 5 and 7 of his contract. If Schneider is willing to stick around another couple years and gradually take on a greater role, I think the Canucks offer Lu the opportunity to move on, and good chance Lu takes up the offer especially if we can win a cup here before then. Both Florida and Tampa would be great trade partners in this instance so Lu could go 'home'; Tampa will likely have a proper goalie by the time that happens though.
On an unrelated note, and speaking of the Canucks winning the cup:
When you're in your prime it's all about the benjamins. You can be assured if the Canucks aren't going to offer him top dollar (which they don't have for a backup) he's going to go get it somewhere else. He's one knee tear or terrible season away from missing out on a huge payday so athletes got to get it when they can. It's especially true when their young.

ASSETS: Has excellent speed, natural offensive instincts and a good shot. Is defensively responsible and effective at all three forward positions.
FLAWS: Doesn't produce consistently. Lacks strength and gets pushed off the puck too easily. His NHL game has been in decline for a while.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Versatile veteran depth forward.
Just googled him.
I didn't realize he was traded for Ballard.
7/03/2003 Colorado Avalanche traded Steve Reinprecht to the Buffalo Sabres for Keith Ballard; then the Buffalo Sabres traded Steve Reinprecht and Rhett Warrener to the Calgary Flames for Chris Drury and Steve Begin.
How the fuck was Gillis able to get a 3rd rounder for Sturm and Samuelsson???
the way Gillis was talking, he'll be up as soon as the playoffs start, and thinks he would be the type of player who would fetch a 2nd rounder in a deadline trade

He was in the minors. Salary didn't go against the cap but they still needed to pay him ($2,175,000 in the minors). Essentially the draft pick was an extra incentive for Gillis to take on the contract, therefore opening a contract spot on the team and saving the Florida owners $$$. It was still a pleasant surprise that it was that high but it makes sense. IIRC, Gillis said that he would already be up with the team if it wasn't for re-entry waivers. After the deadline, it should be fine since it makes no sense for a team to claim him as he will be unable to join them for the playoffs and he's a UFA at the end of the season. In the meantime, it seems as if he's had a positive influence on the prospects.
Also it was pretty funny that Madden had signed and was released by the Wolves just before Reinprecht came. Now Madden is with the Panthers.
Thank god we have owners now that are willing to pay more for the team's success. Not like with John McCaw/Stan McCammon.

i dunno last week on team1040 i cant even remember what day it was
he's a better player than dumping him in the minors would indicate as the main reason the canucks got him was to simply take on salary, a 2nd rounder? i dunno about that but i wouldbnt doubt he's servicable as depth for the playoffs

i agree he would be good for playoff depth, but I highly doubt he would be able to fetch a 2nd rounder
Keep in mind, last season Higgins went for a 3rd rounder and Oberg (nothing special) and Lappy + Joel Perrault (Europe now) were traded for a 3rd and MacGregor Sharp (prospect that's never going to make it). Zenon Konopka and Brad Boyes were also traded straight up for 2nd round picks at the deadline.
if Tuomo Rutuu fetches a first and a playing prospect like has been rumoured who knows
Wouldn't he need to go through Waivers before even reaching the NHL. Not sure why anyone would trade with that risk involved. Unless you just kept him buried until the playoffs start.

i believe last year had more impact players available. although that can change by the trade deadline depending how some teams play from now til then. also last years draft was deeper meaning picks had more value.
