VANCOUVER—When Princess Diana died in 1997, Elton John rewrote the lyrics to Candle in the Wind in a musical tribute. When Garrett Paquette passed away, his friends and family arranged a different sort of tribute — chucking a large salmon onto the ice during an NHL game.
Paquette, a Leafs fan, had planned to toss a salmon onto the ice during the much-anticipated matchup between the Vancouver Canucks and the Toronto Maple Leafs before he died in an ATV accident in November.
Roger Paquette, Garrett’s father, planned the trip and stunt in memory of his son.
“Roger brought three fish with him. He had these wild ideas in his head and was committed to doing it and Garrett was the same way,” said Joey Smith, one of three friends who volunteered to strap a five-pound salmon to their stomach and smuggle it into Rogers Arena.
“My only thought (when going through security) was that I hope I don’t get patted down,” he said. “I was just going to say I was hungry if I got caught with it.”
Some wondered how fans in neighbouring seats couldn’t smell anything but the group attributed the success to a combination of perfume and vacuum wrap, according to Paquette’s father.
“We were prepared,” he told the Nanaimo Daily News. “The fish even had a special perfume bath beforehand.”
With four minutes left in the third period, a five-pound salmon was tossed from the lower bowl onto the ice during a stoppage in play.
Smith was injured in the same ATV accident in which Paquette died and was unable to throw the fish himself.
He said he hopes the tribute will evolve into a salmon-tossing tradition during home games.
“I think (Garrett) is incredibly proud. Wherever he is, he’s looking down on us smiling,” said Smith. “It’s these little things like this that help us remember him better, a tribute to him and the amazing guy that he was.”
He said he and his friends were able to blend in with the crowd and weren’t caught.
According to the Nanaimo Daily News, Paquette had been inspired by his father who also threw a fish onto the ice last season after seeing the tradition in Detroit where they throw an octopus.
Paquette’s father hoped the team would “get inspired” by a B.C. salmon, the symbol of strength and speed. He kept the fish underneath his jersey for nearly three periods before throwing it. He was caught by security and escorted out.

Anyone catch Burke calling out his goalies? Looks like the Leafs will be in the market for a goalie come trade deadline, rumors suggest that Burke might go after Evgeni Nabokov. It'll be interesting to see what the Leafs give up for a goalie that can at least give them a shot to get into the playoffs.

I would go for Nashville's backup (Lindback). He's at least fitting the "new" leafs seeing as he's a young up and comer. At 6'6, he is a monster of person and
Besides, with Rinne locked up for like 6 years, this kid has no chance of being for a starter.

David Booth's close friends and family don't believe he plays in the NHL. He'll prove it tonight
Tonight, Booth will play his first ever NHL game in his hometown. He hasn't played a game at the Joe Louis Arena since his days at Michigan State University.
