I guess MG is thinking about short term right now and just win the cup, but I have a bad feeling about this as this kind of reminds me of the Cam Neely trade to Boston...
So they better win this year.

Pro-trade view:
We're trading for a young, skilled power forward that can play on the 3rd/4th line next year, and be a force as a second liner in years to come. Plus, he's fared better statistically than Hodgson at the same age. Also, we acquired an Ehrhoff type player, who was +10 on a generally minus Buffalo Sabres team. He also plays the right side, and can be insurance when Salo goes down. Bolsters our power play D, so that one of Hamhuis or Bieksa play and not both are needed.
Anti-trade view:
We just traded Linden for Bernier.
Steve Bernier: RW, 6'2, 220 lbs, drafted 16th overall, played in AHL 3rd year after being drafted, posting 20 goals, 23 assists, and 33 PIMs for 43 points in 49 games.
Points per game: 0.8776
Zack Kassian: RW, 6'4, 228 lbs, drafted 13th overall, played in AHL 3rd year after being drafted, so far posting 15 goals, 11 assists, and 31 PIMs for 26 points in 30 games.
Points per game: 0.8667
^ Yeah.
Gragnani - Plug.
Objective non-frenzy trade view:
We traded away a young, skilled center in order to acquire depth on the right side in case of a Salo injury in MAG, a young offensive defenseman, and Zack Kassian, a skilled power forward that may become the next Milan Lucic. Hodgson wasn't going to get a spot besides from 3rd line center and 2nd unit PP for the foreseeable future, as H. Sedin and Kesler would have those spots locked up for the next ~5 years (probably). However, this was basically a trade for a risky power forward that could turn into nothing, or be very good, whereas the value on Hodgson could be better assessed. MAG was thrown in so that we would take the trade.

The issue is yes the nucks got bigger with some skill sets kassian but still I see this as a cam neely trade 20 years ago.... so who's going to look after the second power play now?
At the end of it see what happens in the plays now...

Yeah, I know. On other forums, they all think Kassian for COHO is a good trade for us, but there is mixed feelings everywhere. Meh.

At the end of it see what happens in the plays now... | so you see it as a trade that in hindsight 20 years after was a mistake? :/
as MG said, in the current state the nucks are Cody was going to be in the same 3rd line center position for the next 3-5 years regardless of what happened he was never going to take Hank or Keslers spot
personally i see this trade moreso like the Ballard/Grabner thing, having Kassian [if he can play up to potential] arguably puts us closer to a cup than having hodgson toiling on the 3rd line, it's the same as having Ballard as a depth dman gave us an additional push that Grabner would have never provided in the playoffs
with that said players like Cody have alot of heart and had a knack for scoring big time goals, ill miss him as a player for the nucks
I also agree with Bmac from 1040 who pretty much summed it up when he asked, In the boston game when Salo was low-bridged, who stood up for salo? -nobody-

Mike Gillis response to reporters about the Hodgson trade: Canucks Report - Vancouver Canucks - News
“I think we got more balance in our line-up, more diversified. If you look at centre ice, we’ve got a lot of strength with a lot of veteran players there and the only real power forward we have on our team with that kind of size and speed would be David Booth and we now have a younger player, whose 21, who has that. With Marc-Andre we got a puck moving defenceman who can play on the power play and he’s got really good offensive skills.”
Gillis ended his scrum with a quote that truly resonated with me.
“It’s about balance and it’s about being able to play in any situation and I think we’re better able to play in any situation today then we were.”
I do agree with MG in some respects. Are the Canucks tough enough and gritty enough to play in the Stanley Cup playoffs against big physical teams like Philadelphia and Boston?
The team has all the ingredients now for a deep playoff run: offensive skill, speed, good face off team, more depth at defence, depth at goalie position, good special teams, and now size and toughness.
The jury is out on Kassian though. I wanna him see him play first before making any comments about him.

finally get to comment on the deal as im home.
the hodgson trade is good imo. theres more to it than you guys think. honestly if you know anything about hockey and remember the problems lindros created back in the day when his family told him what to do, in a year or 2 you'd be seeing the same with hodgsons camp.
Hodgson has the chance for 70pts in this league but if hes stuck on the 3rd hes not gonna crack 50 often and thats a waste. Its been obvious for some time he was the odd man out. He isnt great on the wing, and hes not good enough(faceoff wise, backchecking etc) to knock Kes to the wing.
Hodgsons dad runs his life to a certain extent going back to his ohl draft days where they told the league there was only 2 or 3 teams he would be willing to play for. his family pushed him to cut ties with the canucks trainers and his camp has had some harsh word towards the canucks. His father did not like his first agent due to not seeing eye to eye and resulted in him leaving that agent. Many analysts close to the canucks feel that this trade was actually brought on by his parents and agent to a certain extent pressuring the canucks and hodgson. I honestly saw this being a problem and have mentioned it before. Yes hodgson will be a good player but he would of been a giant headache down the road. Its no coincidence that he ended up close to ontario either.
As for Kassian he is still rough around the edges. But he is skilled. During the 2010 Memorial Cup he dominated it. Best player on the ice, players were afraid of him much like how lucic dominated in 2007. If you look at Kassian and gragnani together we got the best of the deal and possibly the most upside. Although the best player in the deal went to Buffalo.

Heard that coho got traded to buffalo when I was at work but I thought the guy who said it was joking. Just get home now to find out this is who we got for him, god damn. Hopefully Gillis is some kind of genius and this pays off for us in the playoffs.
I'm going to miss cody tho, think we could have gotten so much more for him.
