Maybe that's why they haven't signed Weber yet......lol

I know GMs in the past have made offer sheets...but it seems like an unwritten rule to not make offer sheets for franchise-type players??

Like if a team made an offer sheet to Stamkos, resulting in him signing with that team, or Tampa matching and having to sign Stamkos for a price that handcuffs them for many many years, would that GM have a hard time making trades with others around the league?

You should ask Brian Burke and Kevin Lowe about this...

:lol

But on a serious note, I doubt any one will make offer sheets on Stamkos or Doughty just because of the sheer amount of money and draft picks it would cost. These guys want to be part of Stanley Cup teams but what Stanley Cup team is willing to give up 4 of its first rounders for a player? Its like a catch-22.

411ken 07-14-2011 08:07 AM

^ To me.. if you are a stanley cup contender and you lose 4 1st rounders that would be "fine
as it will end up between picks 26-30..

Stamkos > 4 picks between 26-30

Also, it's not like it's impossible to obtain a 1st rounder through trades too. but guys like stamkos, etc. just do not grow on trees..

That's just me though :D and maybe I'm saying that because i'm a HUGE stamkos fan :) lol

I don't know man.

Losing 4 fourth rounders in a row would be pretty detrimental to your development of players.

Dustin Penner doesn't count! He's a bum.

Expresso 07-14-2011 08:23 AM

1st rounders don't always pan out ask Patrik Stephan. Say on average 50% of your first rounders pan out. Thats trading two prospects who can help in 4-5 years for Stamkos.

^ That's an understandable concern for sure but obtaining someone like Stamkos (a superstar) over 4 late 1st rounders (not knowing if they'll even pan out and make the team) is an easy decision for me. Just focus the scouting on gems for the 2nd round (ala Zetterberg or something lol)

If you are someone like the leafs then I understand not pulling the trigger on him cuz those 4 first rounders could still turn up as a lottery picks LOL

But ya, if I was a GM of a contending team that has the CAP.... Stamkos > 4 picks :) all day every day

Is this a candidate for goal of the year if it happened in IIHF's Division III championships?

411ken 07-14-2011 08:30 AM

^ That was a BEAUTY!!

Yes, only clowns like Kevin Lowe and Bobby Clarke seem to be willing to make offers.

MG made some pretty legit offer sheets in his first year as GM (e.g. Backes)

7seven 07-14-2011 08:39 AM

List of offersheets signed.

List of NHL players who have signed offer sheets - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I still remember the uproar back in the day when Shanahan, Sakic and Fedorov signed their offer sheets. I also remember when the Canucks lost Nedved to an offer sheet and Craig Janney refused to report to Vancouver as compenstation haha.

I would suspect that offer sheets have been made to Stamkos and Doughty, but if the player doesn't sign them, we'd never know. I don't see either wanting to leave TB or LA, both are amazing places to live for a young millionaire, both good teams and State of Florida has no State income tax for Stamkos.

MR_BIGGS 07-14-2011 08:40 AM

It just seems like it's frowned upon by the majority of GMs, especially for franchise guys.

I completely forgot about the Ohlund offer sheer from the Laffs.

5 years, $10 million & $7.5 million signing bonus

so you wouldn't trade Nicklas Jensen, Jordan Schroeder, Cody Hodgson and Patrick White for Stamkos?

Or Grabner, Schneider. The only good (recent) first round picks are Kesler and maybe Bourdon, if he were still with us.

I sure as hell would do it.

Expresso 07-14-2011 10:54 AM

lol @ some of the offersheets.

Edmonton gave up a lot for Penner, what a bust.

We should have let STL take Bernier haha.

b0unce. [?] 07-14-2011 10:57 AM

I'd even pay Stamkos the league cap (I think @ 12m for 1 season) for 1 season with us :lol
Hell yeah man, Stamkos is a proven performer, i'd give away some 1st rounders for him.

shawn79 07-14-2011 10:58 AM

stamkos needs a setup man, oh wait we have the best set up man in the league. Henrik Sedin!

jeedee 07-14-2011 11:08 AM

If only STL didn't match the Backes offer sheet..he'd be playing with Kes and fuckin shit up :okay:

^Plus we get to see the great gal Kelly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stamkos > 4 bottom first round picks. But cap hit is going to rape you like a bitch.

MR_BIGGS 07-14-2011 01:10 PM

Pierre Lebrun has left CBC's HNIC and moved to TSN.

CBC is going to the shitter when it comes to their NHL coverage. I wonder when Saturday night hockey will be on TSN.

Apparently Sportsnet is getting a major makeover for the upcoming season too, but until they get better personalities to cover the NHL, they will never be as good as TSN.

lol at Patrick White, seems like Nonis and the staff had a hard on for USHL players that year

Ronin 07-14-2011 02:00 PM

Backes + Kesler + Ryan Callahan (heading to arbitration with NYR)

Would've been a badass line. TEAM AMERICA
