VANCOUVER -- Three people were killed and another was left in critical condition Monday evening after a passenger car slammed into the back of a transit bus, according to Vancouver police.

The red Toyota Corolla was travelling southbound on Granville Street around 6 p.m. when it rear-ended the bus at Nanton Avenue.

“Witnesses reported seeing the car travelling at a high rate of speed and weaving through traffic shortly before the collision,” wrote VPD spokesperson Const. Jana McGuinness in a press release.

Police say the bus was in the process of making a scheduled stop when it was hit by the vehicle.

After the collision, the car spun around backwards and came to rest in bushes on the southwest corner of the street. The engine compartment was pressed far back toward the passenger cabin.

Matthew Millar drove upon the scene moments after the accident and rushed to help.

He said the car was on fire and billowing black smoke when he arrived.

"The most that we could do was just get the flames out and wait for the appropriate equipment to arrive," he said.

Two of the vehicle's occupants died on the scene and another died on the way to hospital. Police have not yet confirmed the identity of the victims.

None of the passengers on the bus were hurt in the accident.

Claudio Puyssegur said he was riding on the bus when it was hit. He was dozing off at the back of the bus on the passenger side when he was awoken by the impact.

“It was pretty traumatic,” Puyssegur said of the accident.

"We got out of the bus and we saw the car was smoking and there was… pandemonium," he said. “The fire department got there really quick, as did the ambulance.”

Granville Street between 25th and 28th avenues was closed to all traffic immediately after the accident, causing buses to be re-routed between 41st and King Edward.

Police expected to re-open the street by 11 p.m.

wow. an accident that bad at 6pm and no collateral damage. what are the chances of that?

cheapskate 06-21-2011 04:46 AM

How fast does one have to go to cause that kind of impact? 100KM/HR in the city? I don't think I've ever seen a car that mangled from an accident in Vancouver.

StylinRed 06-21-2011 04:54 AM

100km/h seems too slow for that kind of damage...

that's horrific i hope the passenger in critical survives

ilvtofu 06-21-2011 07:44 AM

Yeah that looks fast, and it looked like part of the car got wedged under too, looks fucking horrific

sonick 06-21-2011 08:07 AM

It's terrible that lives were lost, but come on, 6pm is pretty much right in rush hour, on one of Vancouver's main streets, weaving in and out of traffic in a Corolla at high speeds; that is just idiocy... Thank goodness nobody else was hurt.

Qmx323 06-21-2011 08:27 AM

Sad, but weaving in and out of traffic AND going at least 100+ at 6pm on Granville?

RIP....

BoostNseveN 06-21-2011 08:33 AM

100km/h may not seem that fast in the city. But rear ending a halting bus at 100km/h is probably like slamming into a building.

mercyboy 06-21-2011 09:36 AM

wow.......heart goes who lost there love ones....R.I.P

Phat_R 06-21-2011 11:39 AM

poor passengers! what a terrible tragedy.

Santofu 06-21-2011 11:54 AM

I hope that crash doesn't involve with the stuck gas pedal.

xyz123 06-21-2011 12:11 PM

... why would you go that fast in the city!? Especially on granville? RIP and condolences to the family, remember to drive safe everyone.

GLOW 06-21-2011 12:16 PM

glad no one on the bus was hurt

- kT 06-21-2011 02:36 PM

driver = dumbass. there's no reason to be driving fast enough to get your car that fucked up at 6pm when everybodys going home from work, much less on granville street

RIP to the passengers, no sympathy for the driver

maxxxboost 06-21-2011 05:08 PM

Need more info, but RIP.
Seriously. What was so important that they needed to go that fast.

optiblue 06-21-2011 05:56 PM

must be faster than 100km for sure!

Euro7r 06-21-2011 08:43 PM

If this retard is weaving in and out of traffic at a high speed, it's given an accident is bound to happen. I'm not even going to feel sympathetic that's he/she died. You live by the consequences of speeding.

Zyzz 06-21-2011 10:33 PM

wtf i didnt know corolla can go that fast

but they are built like just sheets of metals thou, sat in one and felt really dangerous

It's most likely that the passengers also knew exactly what they were getting into. I doubt they were screaming 'let me out' the whole time, although I guess it's possible..

SupraMan604 06-22-2011 12:14 AM

Why do people do such stupid things glad no one else was hurt...rip

spideyv2 06-22-2011 12:33 AM

Condolences to the passengers, driver was an idiot.

hard to say, but either way, the only person who had control was the driver

Nlkko 06-22-2011 12:55 AM

Good riddance. Good thing it hit a bus instead of other cars or there'd be more casualties.

Those old Corollas are really squishy though. Probably why the damage looks worse than it actually is.

7seven 06-22-2011 06:09 AM

CTV news mentioned it was a family from Alberta in the car. Who drives like a maniac in rush hour like that, especially with family in the car
