Thanks again for the reply, does she assign lots of irrelevant readings each lecture? I hate profs who assign lots of useless readings that are just "background" info and not relli needed to do well in that course. And how many pages for the paper you have to write and have to use how many additional sources (journal articles) ? I heard from ppl who took 336 that she tests little bits of math for the midterm and requires you to know some bell graph or curve. Her ratings are not as easy as you say they are on ratemyprof.com

I usually don't trust ratemyprof that much. If you know your econ concepts pretty well then you should be fine. If you need upper level arts electives I think econ is the way to go, otherwise you could take a language.

I still have my old papers from her classes that you can take a look at.

Yup, took it with Douglas.

Like joeystorm said, you can either do a community service learning group work related to poverty and inequality or write a term paper. Most people in my class did the CSL and so did I. It was pretty easy because it was the first time they were doing the volunteer stuff when I took 317 last winter. I actually learned a lot through the community service.

There are also labs where participation marks are given as long as you show up. Labs are all group work too so you get to work with different people.

Midterm was take a take home exam. Careful on this one as the marking is a bit harsher. You need to give very specific and detailed answers.

For the final she gives guide questions beforehand based on the assigned readings. Honestly, I didn't buy the package and did not do any readings. A bunch of us just made a google doc where people answered the guide questions and we all studied from that. The questions on the final were very similar to the guide questions.

You don't really need any econ knowledge for the course. It helps but its not needed. There is no math at all.

thanks for the input, i'm an econ minor so i gota take 6 more econ courses to fullfill that requirement. For the Coummunity service thing you were talking about, what is it? Is it where you go to a community centre to work on it or what? Do you do it during your own time?

For the coming fall semester i plan on taking econ 341 "economic development of Asia" with Akbar Mohammed, econ 387 "transitions and transformation" with Neary Hugh. Any thoughts on those 2 courses?

For term 2 i signed up for econ 356 "introduction to international finance" with Gordon Munro who everyone on ratemyprof said is super easy where you just gota memorize his slides. I am also signed up for econ 336 with Catherine Douglas. Any thoughts on econ 356 ? thanks in advance!

You work with an organization and basically help them out. You might have to do some research for them, spread awareness for their cause, create a website so they can reach out to more people, find potential donors or supporters, create a video for them, go to schools and talk about them, plan a film festival, and etc. You do it in groups so the workload is very manageable. Don't get turned off if it seems hard - its not. The organizations give presentations and you can choose based on that. We had CCPA/First Call, Lotus Outreach, TRAS, and Frog Hollow.

thanks for ur advices !! did u grad from ubc yet? btw i'm from richmond too and i am doing econ as my minor so i gota kill off 6 more econ courses ( i have done 4 so far). Math is not my thing so i gota take courses that require less math as possible

I did Econ 355 but with Kotwal. Class was ok. Average difficulty, just need to exert more effort.

I took Econ 356 with Lahiri. This class was really fun. As long as you understand your basic macroeconomics you should be fine. No math, just a lot of graphs and diagrams but its really easy to gain the intuition for them because its pretty much cause and effect. Once you get to 456 that's when there's a lot of math and it becomes much harder haha

Econ 371 Economics of non-renewable resources is supposed to be pretty easy too.

Just avoid any class with Vaney if you don't like math.

econ 371 this sem is taught by chapple Clive and i think its gona be relli hard based on ratemyprof. He teaches using alot of derivatives which i think i gona die from if he tests me on that. Chapple clive is one of the harder profs for econ i think. I was gona take econ 365 with Vaney this summer but ended up dropping it cause i sensed that it was gona be a hard class. I am an econ minor so i just need 10 econ courses in total of my choosing so i rather choose the easier ones.

Nope.... Starting September it will be my sixth year there (sigh..) I was supposed to grad last term but I was short 3 credits (basically failed 1 course and my CPSC prof wouldn't bump me to a 50 and I was pretty damn close)

I do most of my studying at the no 3 and ackroyd blenz, I'm like always there if I have school (which I don't for the summer).

Oh sorry, I actually meant econ "351" women and the economy by mukesh eswaran. I said "355" in my previous post. Econ 351 was hell !!! I managed to pass with a 50%. I was pissed at this course cause it wasn't meant to be a hard course compared to 301,303 etc and the class midterm average was 56% which is super low for an econ course which isn't a core course( required) for an econ major/minor.

Oh yeah... eff that course. I took it too last term thinking it would be easy but it was hard!! He's too nit picky and demanding with answers for exams. I enjoyed the content of the course and learned a lot but if you want a high gpa then avoid this class. Haha I tell all my friends to steer clear from this class. Had to study super hard for the final just to get a decent mark. It was my first final last term so I literally studied for a whole week just to pull up my grade. I feel that it should not have been that much effort.

We were probably in the same class lol. He scaled the 56% didn't he? Made it like 60% or so.. still friggin low for a third year level. Econ 351 also has the lowest average among ALL econ courses. I found this out too late

Yea I was in that class, I failed the midterm got like 23% and managed to pass the overall course with a grade of 50% (super lucky). You drive a honda s2k right? I think I know who you are. I saw you driving around the law building at ubc during that semester.so are u a econ major or minor? When do u grad?

How close were u from passing? u actually only need 49.5% to pass cause it'll get rounded to 50%. Did u try talking to the prof abt it? damn it sucks, gota pay an extra sem for parking and $90 for the u-pass which sucks.
