il never understand why people pay to have their cars shown, in a show where the people you are paying to have your car shown are making money off you.

if anything they should be paying you to bring your car in.

^ too bad we cant fail you too,

its a valid point, if anything make car submissions free, why on earth would people pay money to have their cars looked at? just go to any weekly meet and do the same thing for free.

not only that, the car shows here are weak as hell compared to the ones in the states, the ones down there are geared for adults, not families

I agree the admission doesnt make much sense especially the amount they are charging is quite a lot. However its the negative attitude people have in this town that shuts down car shows for 2 years in a roll.

Would you guys rather have absolutely nothing to show for in this city thats related to cars? Where are the car enthusiast? IMO having something to show for is better than nothing, at least you have a choice.
States is different, their crowd and support is like a million times larger than us, small community has to start somewhere.

I see it just like the rest of local autosports: You get PAID to show up. Your car is pretty much your investment into the event right? Without cars there is no show. It doesn't work the other way around. So if cars are the show then why are they paying to enter their own event? At least have free admission for show cars. That would spark competition between enthusiasts to have the best car to secure their spot in the event. Money needs to come from general admissions, vendors and sponsors.

It's all marketing isn't it. When your target market is in all one venue for one reason there's high value that needs to be cashed in on. They need to find a better way to make cash than charging these owners to show off their cars when they could easily cruise downtown streets....doesn't make sense. Offering incentive to attract more cars = larger crowds = more interested parties = more $$$ etc etc

There's definitely potential but it just doesn't seem like organizers have been able to get the right formula going. To me it just seems like terrible planning.

and mod's being able to fail but not be failed is BS, it should work both ways or not at all.

Right, all about marketing. Registration fees will probably barely cover the cost of the trophies. You have no clue what kind of money goes in to covering the costs for holding an event like this. If it was so lucrative where are the other car shows?

I guess just one of the perks of doing stuff for RS.

P.S. I don't get compensated by the organizers of the event. I was merely trying to help out the enthusiast community on both sides. I'm not employed by the organizers.

I think this debate only comes up in Vancouver because the modding scene is so small.

But in a larger market, the business model goes like this:

Car owners mod their cars entirely for the purpose of putting it in shows. They pay entry fees to compete. Just like any other sport-- you want to play, you need to pay.

Organizers take the entry fees and put on the show. They charge admission to those who attend as spectators. You need both revenue sources to make it happen, otherwise there's no profit and no incentive to put the show on.

Vancouver's modding scene has pretty much died off over the past few years. And then when a show eventually comes along, nobody wants to pay. lol

Western Speedway. They pay you to show up. The more cars the more money you make. It's not a lot ~$50 but it's better than nothing. And because of that they take some simple events and make them look bigger than what they are, because of driver participation, and they fill the stands. I know for a fact, from putting on events at Western, that the money doesn't come from drivers at all. The money is in general admission and added sales (ie food and merch). Income from drivers is the cherry on top but is easily shadowed by spectator revenues.

Listen to your audience and needs of the community the event is trying to represent. Find financial backing. It's obviously not as black and white as that but I really have a hard time believing that it's as difficult as it's made out to be. At the end of the day there's going to be a profit and that profit stops at the point where the organizers want it to stop. Businesses don't hold events to lose money. Period.

They way I see it is we're the paying customers. Would I rather spend $50 to enter my car into a car show or $50 for entrance to a local drift event where I get to see cars that are just as impressive and get to track my car? It's a simple choice. I don't see these events offering anything spectacular back to community it represents past what could happen in a parking lot.

You've never organized a large event, right?

You can spend your $50 however you want. Nobody is putting a gun to your head. For those people who invest thousands into making a show car, $50 is nothing if it means a chance at winning a trophy.

the difference is I wouldn't pay to have it shown off like your fwd car.

and the honda comment was aimed at untastefully moded civic's and that sort not nice nsx, s2000, etc.

because venues are never free?

because the cost to run a show is way more than the cost of just parking a car?

bringing in entertainers, models, large anchor brands, paying for venue, insurance, paying employee's.

dont forget, the show may be for 1 day to the public, but its at least a 3 day rental. so that overhead triples. $20 bucks is NOTHING.

if you are complaining, its because you never competed before, or you have never won and gave up right after. take it as a tip if you lose, why did you lose, what did your competitor have that you didnt? is it just the $$$ invested, or maybe they just got more showmanship than you? turn that into motivation for next year. most of the time, you become friends with ur competition, and thus you compete as a group, for fun, for recognition, for a plastic trophie.

Too bad I'm mobile and cannot fail you.

What weekly meet would you like to attend? Vancouver does not have a spot that all car enthusiasts hang out at every week. Best you can do is crash a small meet, and then you're comparing sitting in a parking lot with a few people to a big meet with trophies and events.

I've been to shows all over Ontario, Quebec, New York, and a couple in Cali and they all charge registration fees. Stop being so fucking cheap.
