I went from a 3gs to a 9900, and now I'm 100/0 to switch to the 4s. I'm just considering wait for the 5, but a 3gs to a 4s is a good jump aswell.

apple introduced facetime long after video calls were created ages ago. Now apple does the same, introduced siri, when voice recognition was there in my shittest beater nokia.

Even my dog knows the difference when i throw him the same squeeky toy he played with 3 year ago, ----> he refuses to even lick it:heckno:.

whats with all the hype everytime apple throws you some refreshed old tech?

TRDeol 10-05-2011 11:54 AM

Siri has been tested in Canada, it works; it uses the US version though. So maps and directions won't work but everything else does.

+1...I had a guy tell me yesterday that since only Apple has created hype over it's voice recon. feature, that everyone else must have had a pretty shitty version of it.

Granted, Siri COULD be the best voice recon. we've used on a phone to date...it could also be the worst. The problem is, without trying what else there is on the market, we can't come to a conclusion of saying what is and what isn't the best.

I had mentioned this in another thread earlier but what exactly is ground breaking about the 4S? It's really a matter of ignorance. Apple NOW has the ability to control their device with your voice...Many of us have had that feature for years now while many others have been oblivious to the feature even existing.

Apple has now allowed us to use voice to text...I've been using that since I purchased my Nexus One over a year ago (Pre-iPhone 4.) So that's certainly not a new feature.

Apple has now "caught up" to what other companies have been doing for YEARS...But what's the point in catching up? Obviously to catch the attention of the masses that are oblivious to this technology by using marketing. However, for the rest of us, I think we would like it if Apple didn't just catch up, but rather went the extra mile. Why bring out features just to have them become outdated in a month? We all know Apple is only going to release one phone a year, so it better be one that will stay ahead of the curve for at least, that time period.

^ Everyone else did have a shitty version. Maybe that's why Google is planning their own competitor to Siri. Why would Google do that? Oh yeah, because they don't have it yet.

Comparing Siri to simple voice recon is like comparing iCloud to Dropbox or Google Docs or all those other half baked wannabee cloud offerings.

Apple dropped the ball on the hardware side, but nailed it on the software side.

RIP Steve Jobs.

Though I do feel that this tragedy has inclined many people to buy Apple products out of sympathy.

^ Yeah, most people on fb and twitter are saying they're gonna buy the 4S just for steve now

In my opinion, Google would be making a new competitor to Siri (that's news to me, I didn't know that before) is because like I said earlier, Apple has caught up. The voice recon. on my SGS2 is just like the Siri voice recon. Of course I haven't tried Siri and this is just an opinion from what I've seen. But now Google will try to take their software a step further to beat it when they are now at par with each other.

I'm not arguing it, but rather wondering what the difference between this and Siri is?

:seriously: You just repeated the exact point I was making to that poster.

From the commercial it seems like u can talk to siri without touching the phone? Aka no button pressing??? How does it work? If it is like that than for me it totally sets it apart from the other.

I have use other voice recognition on cellphone but hate the fact that u still have to press button and that u can't talk like u regularly would.

In any case hack it for the 4

I wonder if it COULD run on the iP4 but they just didn't release it for it knowing full well that it's like the main selling point for the 4S.

Testing Google Voice Actions (Commands) On Samsung Galaxy S II - YouTube

Galaxy S II - Voice - YouTube

From watching the first video, the guy has to constantly exit and go back into the app when asking a new question. I'm not sure but it looks like with Siri, you can constantly ask new things or build off the last question without exiting making it feel like you are actually conversing with the iPhone?

threezero 10-05-2011 07:38 PM

^ if siri really works like the commercial it is a huge step up from existing voice recognition interface. Pressing button so u can speak command is counter productive IMO is the reason why it didn't take off.

Rumour has it Google has included much more advanced voice and facial recognition systems coming with ice cream cone mid-Oct.

If this is true, I wonder why wait... why they wouldn't try to beat Apple to market?

G 10-05-2011 11:43 PM

Question: Is anyone using the iOS5 GM? I have all the files ready to go, but I keep reading comments on people who can't receive texts with iMessage. Just wondering if anyone here has it installed and if they are running into any problems?

This is true. I've seen videos of the demo that they did at their announcement. However, the demo was used for games and fun stuff and nothing really "useful" was shown. Hopefully if they do implement it, it will be for productivity and uniqueness and not just for having fun with in your spare time.

I think when he made the video, he had just recently got the phone (judging by the date and his enthusiasm.) I am able to use this feature without having to go into a program. I just double click my home button and start speaking into it. Also, once a sequence of command is finished, it does allow me to chose my next move whether it be go to the home screen, get direction or what not.

I own an iPhone 4 as well (although it is irrelevant when it comes to Siri) but I do hope that it does implement it well. I'm not a hater on the product or of Apple, I just like to make realistic comparisons. So far, all of you have been doing just that rather than making ignorant comments, so kudos to you guys.
