Wouldn't they want to have an expo to reveal the iPhone 5; just like how they did last June/July with the i4?

Or am I missing something here?

iOS 5.

The "Big" Ones.

- iMessage. Encrypted messaging with photos, video, contacts, locations. Uses WiFi or 3G.
- iCloud (almost needs a separate thread).
- Twitter Integration into iOS.
- WiFi syncing/PC Free/OTA Updates (no more need to own a PC to update or backup your phone).
- Notification Centre.

The "Other" Ones.

- Vibration patterns. Tap user-defined vibration alerts for each contact.
- LED flash for alerts (as mentioned).
- Completely customizable sounds for every type of alert (finally).
- Phone can be used while syncing (no more waiting).
- Tabbed browsing in Safari.
- Keyboard shortcuts (finally).
Summary: Apple is finally integrating everything other phones have already had for years.

Cutting edge stuff ...

I want to know if there are going to be sound/alert profiles? My first nokia 5190 phone had different profiles, I don't understand why iOS never had it.

I'm surprised Google cannot sue the hell out of Apple for the notification centre.

^ If Google actually came up with it first (they didn't) or if Google patented it (also didn't) then they could.

^ I don't know if you can say one person/company came up with it since the basic building blocks have been around for awhile (certainly longer than Android or iOS).

However, Apple did hire a lead developer from WebOS last year (who worked on notifications among other things) and also apparently hired the developer of MobileNotifier this summer, so it's not too much of a stretch to think Apple might have gotten rights to certain IP along with the hirings.

People say iOS 5's notifications ripped off Android. You could also say they ripped off Palm, WebOS or MobileNotifier too. Or you could say Android ripped off Palm/WebOS. I always LOL when someone points out a feature they've seen before and assumes that Android invented it. Same way people think iOS was first and Android copied them. A LOT of what's inside both Android and iOS was borrowed from someone else previously. Neither of them are 100% original.

I hope people understand apple's success would not be without its marketing. They basically built a lifestyle with its loyal fanbase. Them introducing features such as facetime or iCloud would not have achieved such success without their customer's ignorance towards other products. The average apple consumer will not want to care or have the desire to research on other competitor's products, so with the introduction of "facetime" or "icloud", it will seem like an entirely new technology which fuels apple's lusting customers. This all started with its introduction in north america. The hype caught on, and now, the product is globally accepted - stemmed from the hype by americans / canadians.

Mind you im an iphone fanboy

in regards to marketing. i had a HTC Tytn with a front camera way back. never even saw the tiniest hint that it could be used to video conference/call. no advertising whatsoever. then again, north american networks weren't even ready.

Yeah, you could keep going and going. I mean, everybody has copied ideas from each other and made them better since forever. If it's a patent infringement, then they negotiate a licensing deal (or counter-sue until they reach a deal) and then move on.

That's what I'm betting on. paying $25 a month for like 2 months isn't much to lose on a gamble. I kept my Rogers line just in case Mobi didn't get iPhone, but now I don't care. Just glad to be rid of them.

I just tether my wife's iPhone so I'm not suffering too much.

Edited: Now they're saying it doesn't "stream". What's happening is the selected song is being downloaded to your device, but playback starts immediately causing users to think it was streaming content. As well, apparently Apple has the agreements in place to allow streaming, but decided not to at this point because of the "infrastructure" (possible jab at the past problems they had with AT&T not being able to handle the data of millions of iPhone users). So whether streaming will appear in the final version or will be brought in at a later date remains to be seen.

-----------------

iTunes Match released to developers last night (only in US for now, though).

Biggest change is that it supports streaming. At the iCloud announcement they only mentioned the song storage, syncing and download features, and nothing was said about streaming. Maybe they had some last minute details to work out in regards to licensing. Regardless, streaming has now been added which is a significant upgrade.

Song limit is set at 25K songs, and as before any songs in their database do not count toward your storage.

Apparently there's a rumor going around that if you insert a CD into your PC to rip, and it's in iTunes catalog, then it doesn't need to actually rip it in order to add the songs to iCloud. If that's true, then that'll be a huge time saver for catalogging your CD's. Insert, verify and you're done.
