The iPhone 4S & iOS 5 Thread

Since the iPhone 5 hasn't been announced there are only rumors, although some of the rumors seem quite obvious (especially for those of us with iOS 5 Beta's and the SDK). Of course, iOS 5 was announced and testers are finding out what all those 200 changes are.

iPhone 5:

- A5 processor. This seems a given since it's also in the iPad 2.
- Better camera. Also seems a given since leaks indicate Apple switching camera suppliers.
- Screen Size? This is completely up in the air. Suggestions are keeping the same screen (would kinda suck), going slightly bigger to 3.7" or even larger.
- Front LED (like Blackberry). There's an option in iOS 5 right now to enable the LED to flash for alerts. On iPhone 4 it uses the front LED Flash, which is not exactly the greatest, so adding a front LED seems obvious.
- Case/design? Also completely up in the air.

iOS 5.

The "Big" Ones.

- iMessage. Encrypted messaging with photos, video, contacts, locations. Uses WiFi or 3G.
- iCloud (almost needs a separate thread).
- Twitter Integration into iOS.
- WiFi syncing/PC Free/OTA Updates (no more need to own a PC to update or backup your phone).
- Notification Centre.

The "Other" Ones.

- Vibration patterns. Tap user-defined vibration alerts for each contact.
- LED flash for alerts (as mentioned).
- Completely customizable sounds for every type of alert (finally).
- Phone can be used while syncing (no more waiting).
- Tabbed browsing in Safari.
- Keyboard shortcuts (finally).

Just some off the top of my head, feel free to add yours.

There's no Iphone5, most likely it's iphone 4s or 4Gs, there's no LTE in the next gen iphone, same look with dual core CPU

Of course it won't, and it it ever did, you'd have to pay for it with all proceeds going to apples back pocket.

Notification Centre is the biggest reason why I don't need to jailbreak anymore. Wifi sync, iCloud and iMessage are nice to have as well. For those of you who are curious, don't put iOS 5 beta 2 on your phone. It still have bugs that will interfere with your daily life.

^They just need a SBSettings-like implementations and and I'm MUCH closer to not needing a jailbreak.

It's the most useful jb tweak ever.

I never bothered to JB my phones for the simple reason I don't trust the jailbreakers. They really are nothing more than hackers.

^ Sure I am. The only people who are clueless are those who think it's difficult or impossible for the devs who "break" a phone to install a little bit of extra code to do all sorts of malicious things.

^You are Steve Jobs ideal customer.

If anything Apple has installed more "malicious" things on the iPhone. Remember when they found out the iPhone uploads your locations to the Apple servers and everyone freaked out?

The jailbreaking community is big and well-known for many years now. They have brought nothing but benefits to iPhone users who wish for more out of it.

Don't forget that some of these "hackers" are now employed by Apple, Facebook, etc.

I lol'ed when he said "...already years ahead of it's time"

my ass. iOS still has a lot of catching up to do.

I love the iPhone but when they say stuff like that it really bugs me.

I hate their marketing campaign.

During the unveiling of the iPad2, Steve Jobs was saying how it's a year of the "copycats"

Yet a bunch of their features on the iOS is ripped from the Android and other phones.

What can we say? Apple knows how to market to those who are not overly knowledgeable within the phone or technology market. For an average user, who isn't interested in jailbreaks or any way of unleashing the phones full potential, any additional features will just add onto a complex list of things a lot of people won't nitpick about.

They use simple phrases like 'light years ahead of its time' and 'revolutionary' to sell it to those people. Those users don't necessarily care whether you have an awesome and improved, yet copied notification system. They care about the idea that the phone has a lot of features and is so called ahead of its time.

I dun care that they copy others, just the stupid contradicting bs they say.

I actually think that the iPhone should have some tutorial thing when u first use the phone or have popups telling you to do certain things for the first time. I suggest this because as easy as the iPhone is supposed to be, a lot of the people who dont' care to find out what the phone can and can't do dont' know about a lot of big features.

For instance, my little cousin had no idea there was multitasking on her ipod. She said she brought that menu up once but didn't know how she did it nor knew what it was for.

Let's see how many people won't be aware of the "slide notification in lock screen to go straight to them app", "double tap home button to bring up camera button on lock screen" or the "press volume button to take a pic" features.

I agree that the users should be more aware of all the features. The reality however, is that many of the users are just happy that they are the owner of a 'smart phone'. The phone fits their needs (surfing the web, beginner friendly OS, etc.) and unless you're really into the features, you may not get out of your way to find out about it.

For sure we are the latter group that cares about all the awesome updates and such of the phone, or else this discussion wouldn't even be happening.

wait only thing good is the bbm copycat, LED flash, and customizable alert sounds which torch already has.. nice cpu though but not a huge step compared to the iphone 3GS -> 4
