Business Insider did a poll on smartphone users earlier this year. One question that stuck out was what would cause you to switch platforms.
- 24% of iPhone users said they'd never switch to Android.
- 56% of Android users said they'd never switch to iPhone, specifically because they "hated Apple" (their words, not mine).
So who's more open minded about alternatives and who are the real fanboys?
In fact, BI was so surprised by the "hated Apple" comment that they're planning a more in-depth poll to understand specifically what Android users hate about the iPhone/Apple. | Those stupid "stats" and "sales figures" and "polls" iphone users constantly bring up are one of the reasons most normal people (whether they use Android or Blackberry or no phone at all) hate "Apple" (or more specifically, people who worship Apple).

I've been reading the threads lately about smartphones, sparked by the whole RIM ordeal I guess.
I have an iPhone... came from using candybar Sony Ericssons, so iPhone is my first smartphone. Didn't jailbreak until 4.3.3, at which point I played around with various tweaks. At first I tinkered with themes and lockscreens... but it got messy and laggy which totally took away from the smoothness and speed I was used to. I ended up sticking to a few tweaks which I found to be the best of the best: SBSettings/toggles, BiteSMS, and a few other little things.
Battery life went down the drain. Even with 3G off, I couldn't go 9 hours without having to turn EDGE off also, brightness all the way down, and refraining from texting people until I found a USB port. On top of that, every time I hung up from a call, Springboard would crash and restart into safe mode... annoying as hell. All my apps would be replaced into their default positions, so I'd be forced to respring each time I finished talking on the phone. I couldn't find out what was causing the whole problem... my only suspect was BiteSMS. But if I had to remove BiteSMS, I may as well not jailbreak.
(TL;DR: The headache of a jailbreak outweighed the benefits gained.)
I ended up restoring my phone and taking it to Apple to see if they could change my battery, which they did. I haven't re-jailbroken yet... and I'm not planning to. I can go two full days without charging if I have to, but I do miss SBSettings and BiteSMS.
It was only about 10 minutes ago when I realized that I should seriously consider switching over to Android. I have an iPad (jailbroken on 4.2.1 with no issues), so I won't be missing out on games from the App Store, etc.
Who knows... I may be making a FS thread for a mint 16GB iPhone 4 soon... |

dumbest reason i've heard yet for staying with iphone: "Iphone's retain their value much longer than Android phones"
really? now you're just reaching for reasons, admit you drank the apple kool-aid.
People cling on to their phone OS like it's a part of their identity. I've tried every os, so that I could make an informed decision about which one to stick with.

to make an order of best to worst you have to weigh what's important to you
imo its Symbian/MeeGo>everything but someone who finds ease of use important they'd probably put iOS>everything and others would put Android>everything else
its all relative
as for why i h8 Apple its because of their marketing "new" "revolutionary" "game changing" features that aren't new at all.... that and the Apple nut huggers who buy into that bs. plus Apples patent infringements (re nokia) and yet they turn around and sue others like crazy over patents... and Jobs has the gall to speak of "year of the clones" -_-

Animated background is okay but not useful and battery draining. | guess you haven't tried notified pro from cydia :P along with the GrIP add-on, it's just like the android notification system. of course it's not as smooth, but at least it's one thing less you can be jealous of. |

I hated my jailbroken 3g. The only way to get it the way I wanted was to jailbreak. This resulted in an unstable slowass phone. The minute I got an android I could set it up the way I wanted instead of having apple dictate what I can and cannot do. You know android is doing something right when Steve has to bash it and then copy features like the drop down notifications.

Good enough for the time being as the pop-up alerts are terrible.
Back in the days when I was using Nokia, Symbian phones, I loved how they are like mini computers in that you can access all files of the phone like it was MS-DOS or something. I liked how I could change ringtones to whatever I wanted and that there were no limitations. More importantly, I loved complex phones like that.
Then I switched to the iPhone 2G and was like WTF IS THIS SHIT?? NO RING TONES?? HOW DO I SEND FILES VIA BLUETOOTH?? HOW DO I ACCESS THE C:???
It was overly simplified and I didn't like it.
But now the iOS has gotten soooooooo much better but was still too simple. But wait....now I kinda like that it's simple. I dun have to navigate a bunch of menus just to do something simple. Things were faster and more intuitive.
I have completely switched over to simplicity.
Love all the customization the android offers but it is much more complex and now my lazy ass doesn't care for that stuff.
However, I am not a Apple fanboy and if the Android does clearly take over in the future, I will gladly switch over.

Whether that matters to you, is your choice though. There's nothing wrong with wanting a 'toy' phone like the iphone, or something more useful that does everything the iphone does, and more. Neither one is "better" than the other, it's all up to personal preference. | Quote:

BTW when is the RS iPhone App coming out?

I like this thread, it's interesting.
Back in December, I was playing with my friends android (not sure which model). I was not impressed at all. The scrolling on the homescreen was choppy. Tried angry birds on it; just makes me laugh, laggy as piss. I know that this is probably not tot the best model out there but this was my first impression: shitty phones.
Anyways, how good is youtube on androids? That's the thing that's most important to me. Posted via RS Mobile |

BTW when is the RS iPhone App coming out? | They are toys. Nobody said there's anything wrong with that. Android on a base level are toys too. The difference being, Android can do a lot more if you want to, without fucking around with it or ruining it. And if you buy an iphone, I have no reason to call you a 'sheep'. It just means you like it better. And that is fine. And finally, you don't have to be 'tech savvy' to fully enjoy android. Many of my friends who aren't tech savvy AT ALL bought Android phones as per my recommendation, and are very happy with them. For some, it's their first smartphone.
Iphone app will be out once I can get on a fucking mac to compile the app. Because Apple forces you to use their products to even develop for the app store.

ive had an iphone for a while now and will be switching over to android because i think they are better phones in every way. 2 major ones are you dont have to jailbreak(seems to slow down the iphone) and there is a greater variety of phones to choose from. people need to get off of steve jobs nuts go compare other phones and you will see android is superior
blackberry isnt even in the same league

one thing everyone is forgetting. you have to compare 1 phone to another. you cant say all android is better than All iPhone. each phone has their own merit. android is simply an OS like windows.
IOS is a device specific OS.
if you want to compare, choose a specific Android phone against the iPhone 4 and whatever top BB there is.
at this point after owning 3 iPhones, I really love em. however, as long as any other phone offers similar features and awesome screen i wouldn't hesitate to switch.
i choose based on entertainment value ans screen quality.

I'm really liking this thread. I have a Blackberry Bold 9700 right now and its giving me the white screen. I've been using Blackberry's exclusively since 2007. I have decided to try the Samsung Galaxy S2 out because of what I read on RS and a recommendation my friend gave me who also gave up his Blackberry for the first Samsung Galaxy S. Now in this thread I find Blackberry has been mentioned only twice I believe.
I find over the last year the build quality of Blackberry's going down. I also find that their O/S compared to their competitors is so out dated. I think the only thing that kept me from switching earlier was BBM. But that can be replaced with Liveprofile, Whatsapp, or regular texting.
Thank you RS!!

I started using Windows Mobile back when it was known as Pocket PC (2002 or so IIRC). I found it funny how 'revolutionary' everyone thought the iphone was, when my old phone from 2004 did all the same things. What really was revolutionary was the app store, and that killed the usefulness of Windows Mobile. As for WinPhone 7, not sure how useful it is. It sort of seems to have the worst aspects of both iphone and android, so it's kind of weird. The UI is gorgeous though. If anything, WinPhone 7 is more suitable for tablet use.

BTW, where is all the tablet talk, since the title is basically about OS's?
Anyone using those graphically challenged, non high-profile Blu-Ray playing tablets?
