sooner or later, you're going to have to memorize which ones are local and which ones aren't
not all area code calling is local. 250 is all across BC other than the lower mainland. its only local calling from kelowna on mobile from revelstoke to osoyoos. and i think like peachland to winfield for landline (but im not sure if land line changed or not).

we have 778 numbers in kelowna here too.

i always thought when they introduced 778 they should have just split the province up like they did when they introduced 250.

ps: in kelowna I was SIX OH FOH FOR my childhood

Home or cell, both my #s are 604. One of my brothers', as well as my parents' are 604 also. This 236 will certainly confuse me for quite a while, especially given Caller ID.

There's also a "backup" area code reserved for us in the future. it's going to be 672

you can blame drug dealers for all the phone numbers being taken. Everytime their phones get confiscated, they'll just go get a new number.

I remember as a kid on the charlottes in my small town you only had to dial the last 4 numbers of a phone number to call in town. Then when it changed to 7, I didnt think I would be able to remember any of my friends numbers that I was trying to memorize. And it was a rotary phone too.

It isn't really one number per person anymore. You guys are forgetting businesses. And then a lot of businesses have direct lines for each employee. I know people who have 4 or even 5 phone numbers that you can reach them directly at.

236 just doesn't seem like a "nice" sounding area code.

Is there any reason they don't use 8 number system instead of having so many area codes?

They can solve it by just having people with 604 area codes adding a 2 in front of their number, and 778 people adding a 3. Then they have so many more numbers available. Seems better than having area codes that aren't even really defined by area.

You guys are a buncha whiners who cares if theirs a new area code? Its not like you dial numbers all the time... Most of your frequent calls to your friends n family or work are saved onto your cell. Its just the way its gonna be with a growing society. People have cellphones 's homephones work phones sometimes multiple for each.

Remember getting annoyed when you had to call someone with a lot of 8s, 9s and zeros in their number?

which was also kinda amusing how they chose 999 for emergency -- considering how LONG it took.

It's not just people. Businesses, who have multiple lines, add to the numbers here.
