B.C. getting new '236' area code

By: ctvbc.ca
Date: Thursday Jul. 28, 2011 9:27 AM PT

A new "236" area code is being introduced in British Columbia to combat the province's telephone number shortage.

The area code will apply to new telephone numbers assigned as of June 1, 2013, according to the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission.

Existing customers will keep their current area codes and phone numbers.

Without a new area code, the Canadian Numbering Administrator has estimated that B.C. would run out of telephone numbers by August 2016.

The "604" area code was the only one available in the province until 1996, when "250" was introduced. Area code "778" and 10-digit dialing were introduced in 2001.

BUT back then you had to remember numbers. The only phone numbers I can recite from memory are ones that I knew from the pre-cell phone era and Panago.

That makes 4 area codes between 1996 - 2013

Imagine the next 30 years

to be fair nothing happened for the past 10 years (well 12 if you count the time it will take for the new number to be implemented)

Remember when they first introduced 10 digit calling, you could dial 7 digits and they'd complete the call for you after playing a little message.

10 digit dialing and the 778 area code are still relatively new to the interior. I think having to use an area code to dial locally started around 2008 or so. When I give my phone number for someone to enter into a database, I still get people who assume my area code is 250 and enter the 778 as the first 3 digits of the 7 digit phone number.

Not only do I remember having a 604 area code and having to dial 7 digits locally, I remember having to use a rotary phone which BCTel had issued my family when first moving to Kamloops.

Before Telus purchased BCTel the webpage address was mybc.com which still works to get you redirected to the telus homepage and I still use it to do so.

haha funny how I still always type mybc instead of my telus.. lol

I actually always assumed 604 = home line and a 778 number is a cellular number XD..

WTF? How many people are living in BC anyways? There are like hundred of million of numbers with area code of 604, 778 and 250? And yet B.C. is getting another area code? That's just sad. I'm not getting that area code with my phone number that's for sure...

wat..people have 778 landlines?

so I guess this new 236 wont be limited to mobile...and I guess it's across BC and not like 604/250 that are limited to local numbers?

Forgive me as I've never lived in another city in NA but how do they usually assign phone numbers outside of BC/Canada? I mean metropolitans with > 5M pop'n.

My home number is 604 (parent's house), but my cell is a 778. At my aunt's house in the States, they don't need their 425 area code to dial even though Seattle (206) is a half hour from where they live.

"236" doesn't really roll off the tongue like 604 or 778. It'd be kinda funny for 604-related clothes to get replaced with 778 once the new code comes into effect.

SIX OH FOH FOR LIFE

so would that mean the individual with the 236 number be local, regardless of whether in the 604/250 area?

sooner or later, you're going to have to memorize which ones are local and which ones aren't
