+1 for poke

Hell, even the Safeway in Maui had wicked poke. Cali roll style w/ mayo, real crab, avocado and tobiko (+siracha for spicy)

Oh, btw, there's fireworks off Waikiki beach, every Friday night now. I know it's for the rest of the year, not sure if it's permanent.

The fireworks are from the Hilton Hawaiian villiage hotel, usually every Friday night. They have a sign posted in the hotel lobby.

Has anyone ever rented from Advantage Rent A Car? Their pricing is $100+ cheaper than the next cheapest (Budget) for a 7 day rental.

I usually rent from budget on Oahu and only for a couple of days to go to the N.Shore, E. Island and shopping. Averages out at about $100 for 2 days.

On Maui, I can get rates as cheap as $160/10 days, through Alamo.

Going to Hawaii for the first time in November. Gonna be @ Honolulu.

Excited as hell!

Which places do you guys think are must eats when in Hawaii? I've got Giovanni's and Matsumoto's on the list so far.

+1 for Giovanni's, Marukame Udon, Eggs N Things. Lots of people rave about Matsuomoto's Shaved Ice but I didn't see what was so good about it. It's all right if you're on the North Shore already but don't go driving up there just for this.

North shore is a must as the beaches are much nicer there.
You can get a coupon from the Oahu gold magazine for buy one get one 1/2 price for shaved ice at the General store in Haleiwa in the North shore. They have good shaved ice.
I suggest getting that after you try the garlic shrimp scampi at Giovanni's in the parking lot across the street from the McDonald's.

For authentic Hawaiian food without paying luau prices, go to Ono's Family diner at 726 Kapahulu. Easy to miss so slow down when you drive past Rainbow drive inn.

Rainbow drive inn is good to as well for quick and tasty food.

For good reasonably priced burgers go to Teddy's burgers at 134 Kapahulu. Just buy the regular burger and skip the fancy add ons.

If you need some quick takeout L&L is ok for Korean BBQ. There is one in Pearl City if you decide to go to Ko'Olina to check out the lagoons. Very nice but you need to bring food with you. Go to Lagoon 4 as they have the bigger parking lot.

If you crave Udon, check out Marukame Udon at 2310 Kuhio Ave. Don't let the long lineup deter you as it moves pretty fast.

Put down Ono's, Rainbow Drive In, and Marukame on our list.

GF also pulled up this place

Alicia's Market Honolulu: Hawaii Food Served the Local Way

They're suppose to have really good take out poke, so it'd be perfect to eat while walking around.

If you like hiking, you have to check out Koko Head crater trail but go in the morning as it gets too hot in the afternoon. Bring water and maybe a day pack to put it in b/c you do not want to leave anything valuable in your rental car.
Then on the way back If you have a costco membership, go to the location at Keahole and try their poke. Very good.
They also have a couple of items specific to Hawaii as far as I know like the Hershey's kisses with macadamia nuts and the Wasabi macadamia nuts in the green and black bag.

If you are staying on the east side of Waikiki, you can park much cheaper at the Banyan apartments than what the hotels charge.

We took the $80 option for the week.

The hotels charge around $25 per day.

If this is your first visit, then I would recommend checking the Polynesian Cultural centre. Just skip the Luau as it is overpriced like most and you can get the same thing for cheaper at Ono's family diner.
The hike at Diamond head is nice too

We went to the Walmart behind Ala Moana mall at 700 Keeaumoku Street to buy a case of water for the week.
Hank Haute dogs from Diners Drive ins and dives is close by at 324 Coral street. It was ok but expensive considering it is just hot dogs. I think the lobster dog is only available on Fridays.

There is good seafood at Nico's pier too. Located at 1133 N Nimitz hwy pier 38.
They were on Diners, Drive inns and Dives as well.

About Waikiki Banyan: complete FAQ
We're staying at the Shoreline Hotel in Waikiki, so it's about a 10-15 minute walk down Kuhio Drive.

Thanks for all your recommendations

I just came back from Hawaii last week.

Definately a relaxing place. Loved it.

Along with what everyone has already stated, some of my buddies told me to hit up Roy's, located beside Outrigger reef on the beach. (They said it's pricey, but excellent).

I didn't try it though. Kinda regret it but oh well.

There are a few AYCE, or buffets in Waikiki. I went to Makitti, located a block beside Marukame Udon restaurant. $20 per person. Pretty decent buffet, great selection on sushi and fruits.

There's a very very pricey buffet called 5 star international buffet, $50 per person at Royal Hawaiin Center. Lot of people say it's very good, but we never tried it. Wanted to, but ended up going to Makitti buffet lol.

Also, if you head to North Shore, check out the Shrimp Trucks. Apparently they are orgasmic lolz.

+1 for Shrimp trucks. Skip Givonni though. It's far away from the N. Shore (15 minutes?) and not that great. Hit up the Shrimp truck behind just before the bridge to the North Shore beaches. That one is cheaper bigger and tastier.

I preferred Macky's Shrimp truck in Haleiwa over Giovanni's. I found it less greasy.
+1 for Marukame Udon

At the King Village Farmer's Market there's this guy who sets up a table there on Friday night and sells tuna poke. Huge portions in a square take out container on a small bed of rice. He's known as.. the Poke-Man .... He sometimes sells out though so don't go too late.

+1 for Poke-Man. Another reason to go early is the earlier, the fresher. There's also a ton of fresh fruit and treats at the main entrance.

I can vouch for marukame udon. Though it's just udon, I'll bet a fair share that it'll be the best you'll have eaten. The way those strands just slide across my tongue

The prices on the udons can be deceiving though.. once you start adding up the side ingredients, the price skyrockets. A window price of $3-4 will have you checkout at $10 easily when you reach the cashier.

it's what we're missing out here in van. there's a ton of ramen, but where's the udon?

I never went when I was last there, but friends that have done the tour absolutely loved it. It wasn't just Lost though. It was the tour on ATVs that did that big plain in Jurassic Park, as well as some places in Lost. So perhaps I have the wrong thing in mind.
