| CRA Audit of translink credit
Have anyone ever been audited for the credit claimed for bus passes?
I'm wondering what CRA would accept as backup. I know they state you would need to provide a copy of the pass and receipt, but the receipts that I do have are so faded you can barely see whats on there.

Well the receipts is what they would want. You can give it to them and see what they say. Maybe they have some other way of verifying the receipt date and amounts

This is routine. I work in the accounting field and see random personal audits. Just last week they audited a client of mine who claimed $20,000 in tuition receipts.

I forgot the exact name of the form, but don't you use the tax slip from the school? You can download that form anytime on student services (of any post-secondary school).
The only thing you can fudge on the returns is by claiming that you're a FT student (higher exemption for tuition and teextbooks) when you are just a PT student. This should be immaterial, as the difference is less than $150/mth (tuition) and like $50/mth books)

I'm being audited right now. So fucking stupid, for my tuition and what not... You'd think they'd look at last years taxes I filed and see that the tuition is very similar. Fucking idiots.

Chances are, you guys are the result of a random audit.
Unless, of course, someone reported to CRA that you are trying to cheat them and provide a pretty detailed account of what you are doing. That and they are willing to be the witness to your tax evasion/fraud.

only time u would get audited is if the numbers were high. cra say its random but i worked there before and its total bs. its triggered by a computer seeing an unusually big number or an equation that doesnt add up. so for tuition which deals with higher numbers, yes they may randomly audit you but just for bus passes? no way! op r u getting audited specifically for this? did u put $10,000 for bus passes instead of $1,000? lol
also i believe just the bus passes would be enough to prove it. even if not try sending them in with a latter and see what they say. u gotta remember that a person has to manually look at it on the other end so u are allowed to send a letter and do things how u want. theyll write u back if they want more. Posted via RS Mobile | There is a certain limit you can claim on bus passes. doesn't even matter if you actually spent 10,000 a year on transit. The max you can claim per year is limited to the prescribed limit in that taxation year. I wouldn't worry too much about the bus passes but focus more on the bigger items like tuition, caretaker, what have you. If they claw back bus pass money, bfd, thats like what $20?

tia | This happened to one of my clients. I advised her to submit the buspasses only and sign her name on the back (to prevent transfering to another person). It was accepted.

Right now CRA are sending out review requests for many of our clients. It does not constitute an audit. CRA is just asking for documents to back up the claims. Of course, without looking at what OP rec'd I can't tell for sure. Just my 0.02

^ An assessment review is not a big deal. Like I said before, they're just looking for some back up for a particular line item. There's a fax number in the notice so just grab your receipts and fax them to CRA. It is NOT an audit, so lose any sleep over it. Just make sure you do it within 30 days or they will disqualify your claim. It's all written in your notice.
Edit: Just want to add. In an audit they will look at your entire tax return, not just 1 or 2 lines.
