| CL & PayPal..risks?
i never recieved money from Paypal tranactions before..this is for a craigslist ad.
lets get some things out of the way..the guy doesn't have poor english so i'm not suspecting it's some Nigerian scam and he is willing to pay shipping.
I'm just curious how the dispute process works...ie if they guy bitches to paypal that my item wasn't how it was advertised when it was....forcing a chargeback on me etc.

I only use paypal for people with good rep on car forums only.
Never deal with anything but cash on craigslist. You don't want to deal with Paypal dispute. They're biased towards buyers. And he could have good English and still be a scammer.

It's a scam no matter what...
- why would someone out of town be looking at our local Vancouver craigslist ads?
- why would someone local want to buy with paypal rather than cash?
Golden Rule - Craigslist = Cash Only

i actually sold my wow account through craigslist 3 years ago and he paid me through paypal for 1200 usd, but i guess it's probably hit or miss...
Less risky for an online item I guess since I could have stolen the account back at any point.

Have some fun with him. Give him an e-mail of yours that's not tied to your PayPal account. Then watch as you receive a "fake" PayPal e-mail (but good version with PayPal logos and nice formatting) saying your funds have been deposited into your account, but won't be released until buyer receives the item.
What's really funny is they don't even check to see if your e-mail is a valid PayPal account or not - they just send the fake e-mail hoping you'll fall for it.
I get these all the time, and sometimes I like to fuck around with them and make them think they found another sucker.

If someone emails me from "overseas" and says they want to buy my "item for sale" (notice they will never mention the EXACT item you are selling, it's always general and vague)...I tell them to first send me pictures of their daughter.

Golden Rule - Craigslist = Cash Only | To add to that, only do local sales.
Some guy e-mailed me for my camera a few days ago.. told him I'm going to Nigeria in a few days so I'll personally deliver the camera to his son and he stopped replying lol

Someone e-mailed me saying that they just moved from Vancouver to Markham and that we could do it over ebay/western union if I provided either an ebay user name or I transferred money over to XXX account.
I e-mailed him that I have friends in Markham that can meet up with him and do the deal in person and even save him on shipping. No reply.

I had some woman wanting to buy one of my more expensive stamps from my collection I listed in Vancouver CL. I was asking 500 bucks for the item. She's from Toronto. I basically told her she either gets a friend from here to pay for it and pick it up locally or we go through a stamp dealer here in town. I was willing to pay the 10% service. She never replied. I should have at least asked for a nude pic of her, LOLOLOL. Knowing my luck, she's probably a cow.

Always deal with local cash only. If the amount is large might be a good idea to get a friend to go with you or have the buyer directly transfer the fund from his bank to your acct or have the bank issue a money order while you are there.
Sold my WoW account on E-bay for $1200 years ago. The buyer even selected no refund/dispute option. So I waited till I have the money on my CL account, transfer it too my bank acct, Close my bank acct and open a new one. I then give the guy my WoW ACCt info.
Lol the next day Paypal E-mail buyer file a dispute coz the acct that used to purchase my WoW acct was hack. I pretty much ingore it since on my paypal acct was my old address and my old cell#. Haven't heard from Paypal ever since.

the scam isn't that he'll complain that he didn't receive the item.
the scam is that the paypal account he's using was setup w/ a stolen credit card.
So when the real owner of the card makes a complaint, the credit card's bank will try to recover the money, thus, taking it out of your account until they can clear you of any wrong doing.
so my advice, walk away

#1 If he does a chargeback simply provide proof to paypal in an e-mail about how he recieved the right item etc and you will get your money back
#2 Never send the item until you get the money
#3 If you get him to send the $ as a gift, he can't charge back
I just bought a sunroof cassette for my bimmer through paypal from seattle for $200 <- no problems
cheapest one i could find in van was $600
Just because people try to find deals doesn't mean it's a scam
plus people who get scammed are retarded as fuck for falling for it when there's so many ways to prevent it

^i'm assuming it was through a car forum where you could check out the guy's feedback?
I can't see how the seller can really prove he's innocent and it's so much easier siding with the buyer. I mean you could probably use a pics/video of a working product but only ship that same products with some parts missing etc.

There are deals out there but there are even more scams.
Even buying from car forums have a percentage risks. I've seen people buying from a guy with 100+ positive feedbacks and one day he did a group buy and just vanished.
Meet in person + cash = no risk. Except maybe you could get mugged. |
