Reposting with updates Oct 17/2011
BTS plan EXTENDED till OCT 31 presumably
For those late top the party I'll try to Summarize everything:
The plan is supposed to end at the end of SEPTEMBER. Don't wait too long!
NO YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A STUDENT. It's open to everyone, it's just a name.
To get on Mobilicity, you need an AWS frequency phone like the Samsung Nexus S (not from Fido/Rogers/Koodo). Wind phones will work if they are unlocked. Many T-Mobile phones also work if unlocked as well.
$25 Back To School Plan includes:
Unlimited Data
Unlimited Local Calling
Unlimited Text & Picture Messaging
Mobilicity to Mobilicity Calling
Caller I.D.
$40 Back to School Plan includes:
Unlimited Data
Unlimited Long Distance to Canada & the U.S.
Unlimited Global Text Messaging
Unlimited Local Calling
Unlimited Text & Picture Messaging
Call Waiting
Call Forwarding
3-Way Calling
Voicemail + Caller I.D.
Promotions:
- (EXPIRED)Port in your number and take either plan and get $50 credit (My Wallet) with the $25 plan, or $100 on the $40 plan
-Sign up (by calling in) for the Automatic payments and get $20 credit.
*My Wallet = when you setup an online account, you have a thing called My Wallet. Any credits you get go there. You can use the $ to pay for anything (roaming/long distance/add ons/pay your bill) or buy phones etc. Cannot be converted to Cash.
*The credits will be distributed in monthly installments of $10-$20/ month, not a lump sum.
-Cheap phones
Things to consider:
CONS
-Mobi (like Wind) is a small company, they don't have as many towers and therefore, worse reception than Rogers or any of the Major companies = dropped calls, dead zones, no service in underground areas.
-Dealers seem a little underhanded making up deals as they go. Be wary.
PROS
-Cheap as hell, not likely to ever be offered again. Unlike Wind who's $29 plan is only good for 12 months.
-Tethering is FREE, everyone else charges.
-NON contract. leave anytime you want, no penalty.
-My Bill every month is ($25 BTS plan) $28 AFTER TAX. everything is included. No System Access fee/911 BS.
-Plan is good FOREVER, sell it to someone else for $14,000 in the BST forum like a ****** later. |

In their terms and conditions, does it state that at any point in time they are allowed to raise the rates? It's just something to worry about down the line incase they get bought out.. Posted via RS Mobile |

hey also.. jump in this before it ends.. because....
Winter is coming....
err
i mean.. data is changing. - i will not disclose how. Just know this, the data that will be offered after NOV will be very different and not the way it is now.

true unlimited data is just not viable. but in all fairness. 5-6 GB/Mo should be enough for anyone.

I hate Rogers, honestly. They are reliable, somewhat, because I know there were a couple days when 3G network was down and occassionally they have network lags or disconnects, or it's just me. I'm a student and working, and a $40+ bill really racks up the expenses every month. However I'm a skeptic as to how unstable Mobil is and curious because their prices are actually what I have been looking for, hell, I'll even pay $40 flat if they're pretty stable compared to Rogers.

^if you don't take the jump, then you won't know.
One of the reasons besides from price that I went to mobilicity is that I've been reading Wind has reception issues, specifically in regards to the fact that sometimes you can have 1-2 bars showing but not have data and/or calling abilities. Not sure where that issues stems from or whether or not it is being or will be rectified in the near future.
Someone on HOFO said 2012 is the year of pure expansion for mobi...but I haven't a fucking clue what that really means, LOL.

Their network is far more dense and reliable than both Mobilicity and WIND as they've been around for a long time. However, if you can get over the issue of drop calls happening every so often then you will be glad you've made the switch.
I've been both a Wind and Mobilicity user, so I can offer my opinion from both sides. In my experience, Wind has better coverage and network speed than Mobilicity, despite their service is a little more expensive. I get quality reception in Vancouver/Burnaby/N.Van/W.Van, etc., the only downside of WIND so far is that, on occasion, when you have full bar (-80dBm), your reception can drop all the way to ZERO bars (-113dBM), which can cause your calls to drop, but this happens every so often. I haven't had any of the half-duplex issues that other WIND users have experience, so I cant comment on that.
Mobi has weaker network coverage, reception, and data speed in my experience; however, they have great plans. They have many dead zones in the city where there's completely no reception at all, which renders your phone useless. I've contacted their network support team several times regarding these problems, but they just threw generic responses at me and told me that it could be building material and weather anomalies affecting the quality of the reception, even when I specifically told them that the network tests were performed outdoors on a clear day. Just shows that they really didn't care. Despite all of that, everyones experiences will be different, and you wouldnt know until you try it.
Despite the differences, the similarities are that you will be on a 1700MHz AWS spectrum, which in nature, is a weaker frequency that cannot penetrate certain building materials as well as the 850MHz that Rogers and Bellus have. Therefore, don't expect to have great indoor reception, particularly on the bottom/basement floors of concrete buildings. Quote:

What you read on HOFO about Mobi for 2012 is that they are planning to increase their network density, which means adding more towers to their existing coverage area, Which they desperately need, cause they have so many dead zones. They are NOT expanding their coverage.
On the contrary, Wind is planning for greater coverage expansion throughout Canada for 2012.

I am using Wind and I experience what willystyle said above, I can have full bars and all of a sudden it'll drop to ZERO bars and drop my call. This happens almost EVERYDAY which is really annoying. I was planning to switch to Mobilicity but from reading what you guys say, Wind seems to have better reception. If it matters, I am using a 9700, I might just switch back to Fido because i can't stand the constant drop calls.

Why not Rogers? They have a way better selection of phones on the same network. I suggest you give Mobilicity a shot, and if that doesn't pan out, then make the switch back to the incumbents.

sorry i know i posted this in the rogers retentions but it seems to fit here better.
i know this kind of has been mentioned. I'm thinking of cancelling my rogers contract that ends in January, but i really want this $25 plan and settle for a older phone (panache or nexus S). I'm just wondering if I can still keep my cell # or do I need a completely new # from mobilicity? also, should i just wait for my rogers contract to expire or pay the cancellation fee and go with this $25 plan? lastly (sorry for all the questions), does unlimited local calling mean unlimited daytime to rogers/fido/wind, etc so we don't have to worry about minutes at all? does mobi use 4g?
thanks for being patient. i'm just another ancient phone user who wants to upgrade to a new phone yet get a decent plan.

thanks for being patient. i'm just another ancient phone user who wants to upgrade to a new phone yet get a decent plan. | 1. You can port your Rogers # to Mobilicity so you can use your existing number.
2. I suggest you pay for the cancellation fees, at $20 per month, so about $40 of cancellation fee. I believe it's worth it.
3. Unlimited Local Calling means Unlimited Minutes during ANYTIME of the day to ANY local number in the Local Mobilicity Coverage Zone.
4. Mobi does NOT support 4G (LTE), but it does support HSPA+ (Fake 4G).

thanks willy! is the cancellation strictly based on a fixed $20/month regardless of plan?
i've decided to jump ship to mobi. coming from a 7-8 yr loyal rogers customer, this plan is too good to give up. should i get the panache or nexus s?

I recommend the Nexus S, as I've read that the HTC Panache has been getting a host of hardware problems, particularly if you plan to root the phone. Another plus for Nexus S is that it will be getting the STOCK Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 update, if you plan to stick with the stock rom.
