| Android: Stock or Custom ROM?
I am running Darky Rom 10.2 and have tried Cyanogen Mod and notice that the custom ROMs aren't very snappy on my Captivate. I have tried using apps like Advanced Task Killer and AutoKiller, but they don't work very well cause they keep closing active apps. Should I go back to running the stock rom? I didn't use it long enough when I first got the phone to determine if it will make a difference, or should I try a different rom? if so, which one?
I tried using a LG Optimus T and a HTC Wildfire S, both running stock roms and it's far snappier than my Captivate, which doesn't make sense.

Didn't want to start a new thread: If I have a carrier locked android phone and I want to unlock it to use it with another carrier, what are my options?
1) Unlocking from cellphone shops (crystal mall etc.)?
2) Rooting?

Unlock from cel phone shops or just ebay a code as it's much cheaper.
Rooting doesn't unlock. Rooting just gives you access to the filesystem on the phone.

I'm running the 2.3.3 leaked stock AT&T rom on my captivate. I find the battery life and speed to actually be better than the stock Rogers rom that was 2.2 (Froyo).
As far as custom roms, I tried several, but all the ones I tried had battery charging issues (once charged, the battery would begin to drain down as if unplugged) which were incredibly annoying. I like starting my day with 100% battery. Not 85-90%.
I did however unlock my phone myself, for free. Simple enough to do, and at least it's done.

Been using the 2.3.3 stock rom since last night, and things seem to run much snappier than with a custom rom without any task killers. I think the custom roms have memory management issues; therefore, they run slower.
But anyway, the battery charging issue persist if you custom mod it without a fully charged phone. One way to fix it, is to drain your battery to completely 0 (until the phone dies pretty much), charge it back to 100%, unplug it and see what happens. If it drops to 95 or 98% again, plug it back in and charge it to 100% then reboot it to recovery mode -> advanced -> reset battery statistics. Next time you charge the battery should stay at 100% after you unplug it.

The charge issue is due to bugs in the main ROM from Samsung. Anything based off of KF1 and newer should have this bug fixed from Samsung. Calibrating the battery is a placebo affect. As well the bug is very random and not everyone experiences it.
btw. You're not supposed to use task killers on android. They do more harm than good.

Custom rom FTW. Just make sure you chose a good one. Read most of the posts in the Rom post you like before trying it. I used Darky's and the Lightning ROm on my SGSI and it was way faster than stock. Never had any real battery issues cuz the SGSI battery life sucked anyway.

I have had luck with Stock and ROMs. I just didnt like the Scence (sp?) layout however some of the widgets would be nice to have. Cyan was wicked however its boot file was soooo large I couldnt install maps bc my cache had no room. LeeDroid was pretty spiffy however ran kinda sluggish on a few things. Right now I am on Villian ROM 2.8 and I love it except I fucked something up a while back. See post. All in all its fun to switch around from ROM to ROM just gotta keep at it untill you find something you like.
