neo hybrid vs. ultra hybrid vs. ringke

which one should i buy? im not a fan of hard cases and i like the look of the 2 sgp cases better. but i cant tell the different between the neo and ultra... i know the neo is a 2 piece case which is pretty cool but is the ultra also 2 piece? which one is slimmer?

Sorry for the noob question, this is my first smartphone so I'm totally lost on this, but what does flashing a rom do? Does it add extra functions or does it change the ICS os?

I'll try not to be the usual ass that I am in most of my posts in this one...

Welcome to Android; you've made a smart decision, whether it was a concious one or not.

Flashing a ROM basically allows you to load a customized ROM (data image that contains software) made by a developer to your phone. This will replace the software you have on your phone right now, with an altered version.

Customized ROMS or software are generally improved versions of stock roms. They have added tweaks and customizable options that you would not normally get in a STOCK rom. The advantage to this is being able to control more aspects of your phone and perhaps getting more performance out of it as well. Performance aspects can include but are not limited to, better battery consumption, faster processing speeds, better memory management and better camera results. Control aspects include but are not limited to, tweaking power saving options, changing the colors of your software menus, changing the color of your notification bars, adding or removing pre-loaded software that you don't need, ease of access options.

On certain phones, not fully successful on the Galaxy Nexus yet, can give you software from OTHER phones. For example, you could get HTC Sense from HTC's Android phones. Or you could load MIUI, a custom Android based UI. Adding a new ROM to your phone can also allow you to get access to STOCK Google ROMS (official ROMS) before they get released to your phone for updates.

Now, since you're brand new to "smartphones" I will tell you to forget about ROMS completely. Focus on things that you may be able to handle a little better like choosing the right case for your phone, deciding what bluetooth headset you want to use, and making custom ringtones on your favourite MP3 editor. Playing with ROMs can make your phone inoperable, void your warranty and make an otherwise very expensive phone, a "brick."

No problems here. Do you mean when the entire screen is black or you see lines in black areas of the video on certain parts of the screen? I watched the black parts of the top gear intro and didn't see anything. Blockiness is usually to due with video compression.

Can someone with the screen problems look up a HD video on youtube so we can all compare on equal grounds?

I just did another test using this video:

I'm running Manhattan 112 with Franco Kernel (no colour changes though)
Brightness is at around 75% and I see no problems

I see black blocks in that YouTube video but those are obvoiusly compression artifacts and noise.

Is there a big difference between the Nexus S screen and the Galaxy Nexus?

Voodoo Control was one of the big selling points when I first bought my Nexus S.

Voodoo sound is coming to Galaxy Nexus. Voodoo color maybe.. but Franco's kernel already supports that.

I really like the resolution of the GNex, but there are other factors, which make me want to have the Nexus S again.

1. I found the blacks on the NS darker than the GN, especially when looking at the edges. Back on my NS, if there was no direct light on it, you could not tell where the screen ends and where the phone bezel begins.

2. The banding at low brightness, never had that on my Nexus S.

3. Not screen related, but finding out that a Nexus device isn't updated by Google AOSP directly was very disappointing.

edit:
On second thought, I don't think I'm experiencing the same thing. What happens is, say for eg, when I'm watching a Youtube video, and I come across a low light scene, the brightness of the display drops, and it will go back up when it enters a bright scene again. I don't have auto brightness on either.
