Apex Launcher currently isn't compatible with JB. I'm using Nova Launcher for the time being which has already been updated to support JB.

So what happens when you install a custom rom and then a new version of Android comes out? Does the new custom rom that gets developed after just update your current one or do you have to start from scratch each time?

Once you update something that's custom...nothing happens. If you've got the pro version of ROM Manager, you'll be able to check for that ROM's OTA updates.

Keep in mind that private ROMs are organized by individuals, which means that you're dealing with quicker updates than through your standard phone corps, but still somewhat slow relative to Google. Cyanogenmod 9 just got to its release candidate on ICS...but that will now most likely basically be thrown out the window now that Jellybean is available for download.

If you want to keep the custom ROM you've got, you'll have to wait for the dev team to update the ROM. But keep in mind that most dev teams will be tweaking and modding their own versions constantly, even without Google releases. If you want to get the newest latest and greatest...then yeah, you'll probably hve to start from scratch each time. I got my phone less than a month ago, and I've already flashed it three times. 4.02-> 4.04 -> Paranoid Android -> Jellybean.

^So in my situation I want to install whichever is considered the best ICS rom right now and I would LIKE if they did OTA updates once jellybean comes out because I don't want to start it all from scratch again. Is this possible?

Also, when you start from scratch, what happens to all ur data and apps?

If you're flashing custom roms, there's not much point in doing OTA; you can just check back for the newest stable releases and update in the same way that you flashed.

Apps get backed up from google play 'cause they're all backed up; most data goes kaput. I'll be a hundred percent honest; I loved paranoid android as a ROM...but I won't go PA until they come up with a Jellybean version. Jellybean is infinitely better than ICS. My quadrant scores have been cut nearly in half, but it feels like a way way way better phone.

Fuck ICS, JB FTMFW.

Ah. so once they come out with a stable jellybean version you're gonna have to download some cloud app that will back up all your data and shit...flash and install it...reload the data from the app, re-download all the apps and rearrange them again?

Stable Jellybean is out. I'm using it, Meowjin and Darthchilli too.

What kind of "data" are you talking about? the only data I lost when flashing was my texts and the conversation chats from my messenging programs. Contacts are all backed up through gmail and the like; homescreen setup and logins needed redoing. If you have a browser like chrome where you can cloud sync your bookmarks, you're good to go.

With the infinite variations on roms and utilities, very fucking worth it.

Even if you want to stick with stock ICS, there's a guy out there who released a GS3 apps pack, which basically gives you all the functionality of a GS3 in a Gnex.

You can do what I did. I went from a custom ICS rom. Android Revolution HD to be exact to the new custom Jellybean. I made a nandroid beforehand and then flashed. Once I finished flashing I simply advanced restored all my data. Reboot and I'm on my way. Do note that just because it worked for me may not mean it'll work for everyone else. Another alternative is to backup all apps with titanium backup and restore personal apps and data only.

^ya i'm download titanium backup right now thanks. I'd be nice if they could back up EVERYTHING as it is like icloud and just restore.

(ya I'm coming from an iPhone 4 so this is all new to me. I feel like I moved to a foreign country)

I'm gonna give jellybean a try to get a better idea whether to keep this phone or not.

is this the right one to download?

Yes, that's the correct one. FYI, you'll have to unlock the bootloader, which will COMPLETELY wipe your phone of everything. I came from a custom ROM, so I'm not sure exactly which parts are absolutely necessary; best to check in the thread or wait for some people in this one to chime in.

Also, unless you buy the pro version of Titanium backup, you won't be able to restore data between different ROMs. I've never really found any huge deal with backing up everything...it's just a little bit of stuff you lose; and nothing that's of huge importance, really. If you've made the port from iDevice to Android...you'll not notice any major drops from flashing it again.

Well I don't have much data right now since it's still new so that's ok.

I have no idea how to flash it tho. I'm reading a post and it's coming from a phone that is already flashed I think?

How do I go from stock?

//edit ah fuck i didn't see whatever that bootloader thing was

Unlock bootloader, root, then install Rom Manager and Clockworkmod from within ROM Manager.

You should be able to find the Galaxy Nexus toolkit; it has a one-click root-and-bootunlocker that worked for me, then the rest was a piece of cake.

If you're worried about bricking or having troubles, just check youchoob, or if you know anyone in this thread personally, just meet up and have them run you through it.

I'll admit without shame that when i was flashing Jellybean I asked for Darthchilli's help. It was probably for the best 'cause it was around 3AM and I was mildly intoxicated...but I ended up with a Jellybean phone that wasn't bricked. Success!

So I need clockworkmod before jellybean?

clockworkmod is what lets you easily install any and all ROMs. And installing it requires root and bootload unlock.

I'm stuck at step 5. I install the Samsung Android ADB Interface drivers but it still shows up as Android 1.0 in device managers. My guess is because I'm on 64-bit windows? I tried search for x64 drivers but found none.

//edit Nm I found a way in the comments of that site

You need to make sure your phone is recognized by your computer while in fastboot on your nexus.
That is always the trickiest part when it comes to unlocking the bootloader.

Try these drivers:

Okay so I finished doing whatever and installed rom manager and installed cwm.

I see there's an option to Download ROM in ROM Manager. Is this what you use to download roms or does it have a bad selection?

It backs up your entire rom (but not your photos, music, ringtones, etc.). This is a 'nandroid backup'

When you flash a custom rom in recovery mode, you always do a wipe data/factory reset first which basically wipes all the apps and settings from your rom.

Restoring a nandroid backup will allow you to put your phone back into the exact state it was in when you made the backup even if you factory reset the phone or if you flash another rom.

Apps and sms data too?

Is an nandroid same as the clockworkmod backup?

What does one need to do to get carrier unlock on other android phones? Or is that what the first step did (unlocking). Now that I finally learned how to do all this Android crazy stuff, I may go help my friend update his s2 to 4.0 but he needs a carrier unlock.
