Not really. Its already been pointed out that the police can charge them with stunting, and all they need is witnesses to make that stick. The people who called in would probably have no issue testifying to see some spoiled kids lose their licenses and cars.

That seems like a pretty weak case if it's simply based on untrained eye witness accounts. I never took the BAR exam, but I'm pretty sure I could argue a win going up against the crown in a case without any hard evidence.

Remember, for someone to be prosecuted of a crime, the judge or jury must be 100% positive that they are guilty of the charges. 99% sure, 1% unsure means they will walk. Chances are, this won't go any further than the silly media posturing that RCMP are doing.

High-end car race on highway enrages News1130.com readers - News1130

Quote:

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Call it road-racing rage; there's no shortage of angry comments on this website after a group of young drivers was busted speeding in high-end, exotic sports cars along Highway 99.

md writes, "Who provided these idiots with these cars? They're idiots too! You can't buy respect. Unbelievable, and lucky no one got hurt or killed. Suspensions for all, cars sold. Proceeds to education."

Thirteen young drivers are facing charges after a group of exotic cars took over the highway south of Vancouver on Wednesday. They've been fined and have to pay impound costs.

There were three 2010 Lamborghini Gallardos, a 2007 Ferrari 599, a 2009 Audi R8, a 2012 Nissan GT-R, two 2010 Nissan GT-Rs, two 2010 Maserati Turismos, a 2011 Mercedes SL6, a 2011 Mercedes SLS, and 2005 Aston Martin DB9.

"What about some jail time for these wannabes?" writes an enraged grandmother. "They threatened the lives of hundreds of people! What about suspending their right to drive for at least 5 years til they have graduated from the diaper stage to something resembling adulthood?"

Vin Diesel writes, "What kind of penalty is a fine? The costs mean nothing to kids who can afford $200K sports cars."

Another commenter says, "The parents of these children need to be penalized too for their lack of judgement in allowing children to drive powerful vehicles without a valid drivers licence."
:lol

Not likely, if a kid with this attitude drives a hyundai accent, people will laugh if he drives in an attention seeking way. In other words, he won't be attracting attention.

But when you give him a super car, people will admire the car, which gives them the green light to do something reckless and go 'wee look at ME ME ME'

Vancouver authorities sieze $2M in cars for street racing

Volvo-brickster 09-02-2011 11:52 AM

Lol... my first car was an 1980 volvo and the amount of stupid shit I did with a 2.1L carbureted 4 banger with 96hp was considerably more than what I'm doing with 330hp now. displacement/horse power restrictions will do nothing

Exactly!
I currently don't even own a car and take transit to/fro work, but I'd MUCH rather look at expensive exotic cars rather than a piece of shit Civic or Integra (or whatever) with crappy mods paid for by a high school student's job.

My problem is with hongers with N's getting off basically Scott free when your way over the limit on a busy highway during the middle of the day, if those guys who raced up cypress got their cars impounded and sold off, why don't these guys as well? It's basically the same thing cops rolled up on the cypress guys after the fact and took their cars based on heresay

And as for hydes post there "poor people being jealous" I know at least 4-5 people/family friends etc who have 150k+ cars and these people can seemingly drive responsible, take advantage of the full ability of their car, and not make the news..

These hongers just have time on their hands and I'll go out on a limb and make the asumption that none of them including Matt zhang is michael shumacher (sp) if they didn't get caught now it would probably only be a matter of time before one of them was wrapped around a pole, probably for the better.

Agreed to a certain extent but it's not the same thing. Cops didn't just pull up to those guys on Cypress...Those guys on Cypress were CLOCKED on the gun and the cop visually saw them race by them...

In order for the cars to be seized, the BC Civil Forfeiture Office needs to take over an asses the situation. They need some serious evidence against these guys to have a reason to take away their property. In the other case on Seymore, apart from them being actually caught by police, the also just nearly missed 3 pedestrians...That was a clear disregard for safety of others. These guys instead blocked off traffic and had a clear disregard for the rules of the road, the time of others, and the safety of their OWN...But that alone isn't enough merit to seize.

You've never been to court. That 1% reasonable doubt crap is TV/movie bullshit. It doesn't take a trained eye to spot someone driving like a douchecanoe, and remember they aren't charged with speeding, they are charged with driving with undue care which does not require "hard evidence" and neither does the charge of stunt driving.

Regardless of all that, this is exactly why the impound rule has been enacted. The police were tired of people getting off in court via loopholes, so you get punished right away now. Justifying that someone can drive 200+ kmph and get off just cause the witness isn't "trained" is exactly the stupidity that lead to the impound laws.

Maybe if more people that broke the law actually manned up to it instead of wasting court time we wouldn't have the impound law.

Apparently Matt runs a decal business. Hence why he can afford such a car.:fullofwin:

Oh no doubt, i love looking at exotics. But given the choice between having these douches showing up vs not showing up at all, i rather take the latter.

mb_ 09-02-2011 12:10 PM

Gave Matt Zhang the benefit of the doubt even after what happened at the meet but his stupid comment just sealed the deal lol.

Back on topic; I'm a little iffy about this. The cops admitted that they didn't witness the 13 cars "racing"/speeding and were acting on witness accounts. But meh whatever lol makes for a good story I guess?
