getting rid of raccoons..

So i'm watering my backyard, and 3 fairly large raccoons wander accross the fence.. i make a noise and they stop and just stare at me..

i was about to shoot them with my bb rifle, but my friend said that might not exactly be legal. any recommended ways of getting rid of them? call someone? shoot them anyways?

I had the same problem two weeks ago at night time. This big fat raccoon was drinking water from a bucket of water that I left in the backyard. I tried to scare by turning on my yard lights, the darn thing wouldn't budge. Tried scaring it away by making random noises, wouldn't budge at all. Gave up and went to bed LOL.

Honest question, why do you give a fuck?

Even if you manage to scare these individuals away (unlikely) or kill them (I believe that's illegal), unless you rid your entire neighbourhood of raccoons then others will eventually make their way into your yard. Even if you were to rid your entire neighbourhood of raccoons through some sort of crusade against them, raccoons from surrounding areas will start to move in on the uninhabited territory. Humans are just animals skilled at adaptation with massive superiority complexes, we share this planet with other animals, get used to it.

I wonder what grilled or baked raccoon would taste
like... Or maybe a nice hearty stew... You should catch it and cook it!

+1 for don't leave food around.
also make sure there are none inhabiting like a shed or garage nearby. my friend had to seal some holes in the garage (possibly created by the racoons) to prevent them from coming in and nesting there.

unfortunately for him his neighbour leaves food for stray cats which the racoons share in...

i dont think a BB is legal either, but you need to have a pretty powerful BB or else you'll just piss it off...at least that's what i've been told...

you don't have to aim directly at the raccoon with the bb to be effective

it worked for us, but it was a more extreme case for us because at our old house we had a garage-sized fish pond.

after a while, they start walking away when they see you.

First off, rat poison kills in an extremely painful and inhumane way.

Second, how would you ensure only the targeted raccoons eat the food and not your neighbours cat?

I know someone at work who supposedly catches them with a cage-like trap and bait, then he drowns them in a garbage can full of water.

I wonder how your co-worker would feel if he were to crash his car into a river and drown while trapped in it.

Rednecks are rednecks. They have a different type of mentality, I just work with them.
The guy has a crow whistle and shoots them with his hand gun.
He grew up hunting and fishing.
I don't think drowning would make him think of the raccoons any different.
He probably views them as rats. People will kill rats. Highly intelligent creatures, but why do the raccoons deserve any more respect?

So wandering across the fence, and staring at you are enough of a problem that you need to "get rid" of them? Even kill them?

Not all raccoons have rabies, even if they do they're merely being in your yard will not lead you to contracting it. I've had three cats in a neighborhood with many raccoons for ten years and never had an issue, neither has anyone living in the area. Just keep cats in at night.

The original issue was that they were eating out of my tenants garbage, so the garbage was strewn everywhere in the morning after each garbage day.

In addition to that, we just redid the backyard so that my fiancee can grow herbs and veggies, and I'm not sure what the raccoons will do to that.

In addition to that I would rather not have to deal with my fiancee going into the yard in the evening and have her deal with raccoons just chillin out or walking around.

Lastly, if they're a huge nuisance, I kill mice and insects without a second thought, so why would I put on the peta hat now and pretend to be a nature boy. I'm not ric flair.

who do you call when u have neighbor who purposely leaves bowl of cat food on the front of her house and on the deck of her house and allowing a family of racoons sometimes up to 8 can be seen at a time just walking around her deck and front yard eating free food. This is a daily observation by the way. Racoons are not afraid of human anymore. They think they own the deck and yard. They even look over our deck when we are BBQing some times. Although they would never dare to come while we are sitting out.

Since its not our house, I guess I cant do anything about it. But sometimes fear of other neighbors small children who plays in the yard and back alley.
