Yup, that Costco is less than five minutes from the border. If the border lineups are long, it becomes my plan B. 20 cents a litre savings only five minutes away, plus the 80 plus litre gas tank on the vehicle, a small lineup is worth the wait. Lately, I have been crossing the border at 6:00 am. No lineup whatsoever at that time. The 20 cent savings is the difference betwen gas prices in Sumas and Abby. The difference is even greater if one had to fill up in Vancouver.

BBC News - New York City celebrates day without violent crime

Quote:

For the first time in living memory, New York has spent a day entirely without violent crime.

The city police department's chief spokesman said that Monday was the most bloodshed-free 24-hour period in recent history.

Not a single murder, shooting, stabbing or other incident of violent crime was reported for a whole day.

Despite a July spike in homicides, the city's murder rate is on target to hit its lowest point since 1960.

Just a few months ago, residents were living through what one tabloid newspaper called the "summer of blood".

Despite the fall in homicides, statistics point to a 3% overall rise in crime.

There has also been a 9% increase in larceny, which police blame on a surge in smartphone thefts.

But killings are now down 23% compared with last year, which represents a 50-year low.

There have been 366 murders so far this year in New York City, compared with 472 at this time last year.

Experts say such a low number of homicides is highly unusual for a US city of eight million people.

Gang-plagued Chicago, Illinois, has chalked up 462 murders this year, despite having a population of about 2.7 million people.

There have been 301 murders in 2012 in the city of Philadelphia, which has 1.5 million people.

Some experts are praising the New York police department's aggressive crime-prevention tactics, notably the so-called Stop And Frisk policy, which has rooted out dozens of illegal guns.

But critics argue that it has led to hundreds of thousands of young blacks and Latinos being stopped without cause.
I wonder how often that happens in Vancouver. My guess is pretty much never.

NYC = 8 million people?
Chicago = the size of Vancouver?

....wut?

StylinRed 11-29-2012 02:38 AM

vancouver only has 600k people

the entire lower mainland still has less than chicago does but our area, in km2, is about 4.5x larger

MG1 11-29-2012 05:13 AM

^yup, Vancouver proper is smaller than Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, etc.

Lions Gate Bridge re-opened after deadly overnight crash - News1130

West Vancouver Police Sergeant Ed Pearce says witnesses have told them a car was speeding northbound on the bridge at about 11:45 p.m.

"We have reports of the vehicle spinning, for some unknown reason, out of control; [then it] crossed into the southbound lane and struck a westbound transit bus head-on," he explains.

Both men inside the car died in hospital.

"At this time, we're not releasing very much information on the two deceased, other than to say they are two young males in their early twenties in the Lower Mainland. We're presently working on next of kin notifications," says Pearce.

There were 15 people on-board the bus; four were hurt, including the driver. They are expected to be okay.

difference between city population size and metropolitan size is a little confusing and kind of dumb at times. Vancouver is a pretty small city, but it brings in all of the Lower Mainland which is actually pretty big

city ------- pop --- metro

NY---------8m------19m
Chicago----2.5m----9.5m
LA---------3.8m----12.8m
Toronto----2.6m----6m
Van--------0.6m----2.3m

but then you have places like calgary that are stand alone

Calgary----1.1m----1.2m

In a lot of cases, it's difficult to separate the City from the Metro. I mean, I've lived in Burnaby my whole life, but whenever I meet new people from abroad or I'm travelling I'm from Vancouver.

In this case, though, it's for tracking crime statistics, so it'd be like the VPD announcing a drug-bust-free day. ...Actually that's a pretty good analogy. Just about as likely as a violence free day in NY. There is hope after all.

RRxtar 11-29-2012 09:50 AM

its almost pointless to separate city from metro in most cases and i think most people refer to metro areas when they talk about a city, just as graeme S said.

most 'statistics' about a city, are affected by the rest of the metro area. like, if someone kills someone in downtown vancouver, vancouver gets a +1 on the murder rate. but the guy killed and the killer both live in surrey, one works in richmond, and the other in burnaby. and it was over a drug deal they did in coquitlam from a grow op in west van.

hell, Vancouver International Airport, is in Richmond.

RIP to the deceased, but something really infuriates me...

Was watching the news today, and CHEK TV made reference to Revscene while covering this story. Essentially said "the speeders were affiliated with a local car club 'Revscene'" while showing the thread where members were writing their "RIP"s. They almost made it sound like RS is a street racing forum and bullshit like that... got me so fucking mad hearing media put their own spin on news like that. Can't believe they'd put RS in a bad light when members are just posting condolences.

How is vacation paid calculated? I always was under the assumption that only unions received vacation pay, but I am leaving a non-unionized company next week (I have been with them since late March), and I was wondering if I was entitled to that 4%.

Thanks.
