From Spanish runner Iván Fernández Anaya helps opponent Abel Mutai win cross-country race:

Quote:

Basque cross-country runner forgoes victory to help his Kenyan opponent
In a week that was dominated by stories about Lance Armstrong and Manti Te'o, it's hard not to be a little cynical about the sporting world. The story of long distance runner Iván Fernández Anaya may serve as a welcome antidote. The Spanish runner, who trains in the Basque capital of Vitoria-Gasteiz, has become something of a cult hero for a kind gesture that helped an opponent win a race.

Fernández Anaya was trailing behind Olympic bronze medallist Abel Mutai during a cross-country race in Burlada, Navarra. Mutai was leading comfortably until he pulled up 10 to 20 metres short of the finish line thinking the race was already over. Instead of passing Mutai, Fernández Anaya slowed down and told Mutai to keep running. Since they didn't speak a common language, the Basque runner gestured frantically at Mutai who went on to win the race.

"I didn't deserve to win it," Fernández Anaya told El País. "I did what I had to do. He was the rightful winner. He created a gap that I couldn't have closed if he hadn't made a mistake. As soon as I saw he was stopping, I knew I wasn't going to pass him."

Fernández Anaya's actions may not have earned him the win, but they did earn him many new fans. Since the race took place in December, his Twitter and Facebook pages have been filled with plaudits from around the world.

One person who was not so thrilled about the move: his coach Martín Fiz, who told El País he admired Fernández Anaya's honesty, but it was a "gesture I myself wouldn't have made. I certainly would have taken advantage of it to win."

Durian fruit's odour of 'sweaty sports socks' prompts gas-leak call, evacuation of Richmond mall

Quote:

An exotic fruit with a stinky reputation forced the brief evacuation of Yaohan Centre mall Monday evening.

According to Richmond Fire Rescue, the mall had to be cleared at around 5 p.m. following reports of what was initially thought to be a gas leak wafting through the 22,000-square-foot shopping centre.

Mall manager Allan Ho said a customer visiting the mall called 911 after noticing a foul smell.

Tim Wilkinson, Deputy Chief of Operations for Richmond Fire Rescue, said after fire crews arrived at the scene they scoured the building to try and locate the source of the smell — which, according to Wilkinson, resembled sweaty sports socks that had been stuffed inside a gym bag for a prolonged period of time — and after ruling out any gas sources finally narrowed it down to the Osaka supermarket selling fresh durian fruit in its produce department.

Native to Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia, the fruit, with its trademark spiky exterior, has a well-known reputation for its pungent smell.

While it’s referred as the “king of fruits” for its custard-like, almond-flavoured flesh, it’s the smell that can put many people off, even when its husk remains intact.

Apart from having an offending smell, the fruit posed no health concerns and once removed from the store, the air began to clear and shoppers were allowed to return to the mall, Wilkinson said.

In total, the building was vacated for about an hour.

Mall manager Ho said he chalked the incident up to a “cultural misunderstanding” since the customer calling in the 911 alert was non-Asian and likely had never smelled durian fruit before and mistook it as a gas leak.

Ho added, this is not the first time Osaka has stocked its produce section with durian fruit, but it was the first time it had raised such an alarm.

The evacuation, although brief, caused a significant disruption for the 78 stores, their staff and clients as most had to wait outside in the chilly parking lot until the all clear was given.

Ho said he was not sure if Osaka had planned to bring in more fresh durian fruit in the future—it can also be sold frozen.

“I hope not,” he said laughing.

Gun Appreciation Day Celebrated With Accidental Shootings at Gun Shows in North Carolina and Ohio (UPDATE)

Gun Appreciation Day Celebrated With Accidental Shootings at Gun Shows in North Carolina and Ohio

Two people were wounded Saturday afternoon after an accidental shooting at the Dixie Gun and Knife Show in Raleigh, North Carolina. The incident apparently occurred at a security check point when the owner of a 12-gauge shotgun was asked to remove his gun from its case. Somehow, the gun discharged, shooting a man in the hand and a nearby woman in the side.
Meanwhile, in an entirely unrelated incident, a man at the Medina County Gun Show was shot and injured later Saturday afternoon.

As the Daily Intelligencer notes, today is both Gun Appreciation Day and Guns Across America. What a perfect way to celebrate!

UPDATE: And there was another shooting. A man shot himself in the hand while loading his gun outside the Indy 1500 Gun and Knife Show gun show in Indianapolis.

I find it hilarious how Fresh Slice pizza says "Healthy!" on the box just because it's baked. It's still an assload of carbs and fat, regardless of how it's cooked.

I still pigged out on it.

Question....as some of you might know, Staple's having a 10% off 'customer appreciation' this coming Fri/Sat.

The product is the same price (well..34 cents diff) at both Staples and Futureshop regularly.

Obviously after the 10%, Staples would be cheaper....but will Future Shop match that?
