Neat
For the first time, scientists working at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have demonstrated a new type of lens that bends and focuses ultraviolet (UV) light in such an unusual way that it can create ghostly, 3D images of objects that float in free space

What is meant by first generation Canadian?

I'm a little confused about this, can someone shed some light?

If my parents were born in Asia, immigrated to Vancouver and got their Canadian citizenship (does citizenship matter?), and then had me here in Vancouver, does that make me first generation Canadian or second generation?

SpeedStars 05-26-2013 02:43 PM

^ You are their first generation Canadian citizen. You were MADE in Canada

If you were second generation, your parents must've been born in Canada in order for it to be true... At least that is what my parents have told me.

First generation Canadian is you are the first person in your family being born in Canada and So on.

My dad is the only one in the family born in Canada out of 9 bros/sisters so that would make me 2nd generation on my dads side.

There is some debate over this. I believe the first generation is reserved for those who came to this country for the first time.

Kid born here would be second generation.

Like I said, people debate this all the time.

people ask me why I have such a deep hatred for the Massey tunnel.
I took this footage off my dashcam last year on my last week of work. Just watching it again to upload to youtube makes my blood boil.

Wasted so much of my life everyday...

Was in Bellingham yesterday for Memorial Day deals at Harbor Freight. Got hungry and needed gas, so headed out to Costco. Of course, being a holiday, the place was closed. I ended up going to McDonalds. Damn, that high fructose corn syrup ketchup is nasty. I nearly choked on the shit. Luckily, I found some really old Canadian ketchup packets stuck between the seat and the console. I think it was like a few years old, but it was like heaven compared to that other shit. How do the Amuricans do it? Everything is high fructose corn syrup.

Please, sweet jesus of nazareth, don't let that shit anywhere here in Canada. BTW, I noticed a ketchup bottle at home that I bought at Shoppers Drug Mart in the fridge. It says Made in the US of A. Out in the garbage it goes if it has that shit in it. Fructose and glucose are mentioned in the ingredients list, so it may not be that bad.

Actually, Glucose-Fructose is HFCS. It is used a lot more in the US because of massive corn subsidies and an embargo on Cuban sugar. In fact, the corn lobby wanted to change the name of HFCS to "corn sugar" but the government said that would be deceptive.

But I agree with you. I was in Point Roberts picking up a package and I told the lady at the Letter Carrier how expensive groceries were in Canada. She told me that even though groceries are cheaper in the US, the overall quality of the product is higher in Canada. For example, the barbeque chicken at a Canadian Costco is better than at an American Costco, because Canadian farms have higher safety and quality standards-they use younger chickens with juicier meat. In America, land of deregulation, you get really, really good products at the high end and terrible stuff at the low end. Combined with the broken health care system and skyrocketing college tuition and I'm glad I don't live in America. I'll stick to crossborder shopping.

On a side note: American fast food chains give you a LOT of condiments, especially Jack in the Box. Not like here in Canada where they charge you 15 cents for every ketchup packet after the first one. But, I have rarely had a bad experience at a Canadian fast-food restaurant. In the US? There's a reason I only eat at Jack in the Box.

sonick 05-28-2013 10:52 AM

Also Canadian chickens are all free-run, which is not the case in the US.
