^I agree with you guys. However, I would never want to be in her shoes. There's something called pride and integrity. To me, that is worth more than any condo by the beach or 50 inch television, etc. My children, if my wife and I did a good job, had good role models. Just like my parents were good role models for me. Make an honest living without burdening others. That kid of hers is going to turn out to be another one of those people who take, take, take, and never give (selfish). Maybe not the case here, but a form of learned helplessness? I wAnder why she's a single mom. |
Pride and integrity aren't in these peoples vocabulary, neither is the concept of hard work. MG, you driven by The hard rock in the last 2 days? All their new signs are up. I know they would have rebranded the RR theatre with a refresh but if they had left t the way it was, it would have been an eyesore to their new exterior scheme Posted via RS Mobile |
A sign is a sign is a sign............... a place has a name with or without a sign. Let it go, man.............. I have. You can have the last word. I promise. You can piss way farther than me, and I'm glad for you. god bless......... |
Considering you and me are the only ones talking about it I don't think the concern for RR is great :p Last word I swear ;) Posted via RS Mobile |

I get the opportunity to talk to a lot of business leaders and politicians through work, social circles and board of trade events and honestly in the past 5 years, I've been advocating hard for cuts or freezes to a number of social entitlement/handout programs and to divert those resources to trades training, incentives and tax cuts for job creators and businesses and reduce costs for businesses. Personally I feel its better to create more jobs, train people for skilled labour and to reward job creators. I've spoken to a lot of people I've come across and most agree. I understand there will be some that think I'm the devil for thinking or pushing for these things, but thats fine, I do lean more right than left and I at most times think the left is the devil, thats just the way it is, everyone has differing views :D Quote:

I've fallen on real hard times here on alberta, and had to resort to a foodbank. I've been hiding it from my roommate because there is a massive shame/embarrassment that comes with it and I dont want to be bailed out because I always get the "i'm so disappointed in you". It kinda blows that I kinda can't go home for christmas, but the good news is the government here is teaching me a trade (welding) and I've been getting interviews for apprenticeships. I got some interviews for some nightclubs becuase of my 234039342239 years experience in them, but people here are really really reluctant to hire if you don't have a car. Transit isn't an option and I don't have the funds available to buy a car. I can't even get a job at superstore etc because TFW's rule here. Ontop of that noone hires around Christmas. I'm ready and capable to work, with a shitload of safety certificates, but if you dont have a car in alberta, you are viewed useless. I did apply for EI, and believe me i'm trying to get out, but now that I'm literally facing homelessness I can see how difficult it is to get out. I mean I can start a trade tomorrow, as an electrician or a ironworker, or a sheet metal/hvac. But because I don't have a car they can't take me on. They tell me get a car, call us back. They actually work hard here to pull you out of a shitty situation, though, and I could probably go a bit further with a welding ticket working in a shop making some decent coin. Also don't hate on single mothers. Life is tough on them. I know what they have to face, and it isn't easy. |

This will be with your permission, of course. As for the single mom thing, yes, they really have it tough, but the case that was mentioned in this thread isn't cool. You're right, we shouldn't paint people with the same brush. |
^^ Sorry to hear you are going through a tough time, man. There is no shame in being honest and open. We have all been there...I had to pay my electric bill from my change jar and return cans to avoid it being cut. It sucks, but it gets better. It also makes you appreciate the good times more. Don't give up. Its a hard time of year, but it will pass. |
Anybody have a recommendation for a place that can chrome engine parts? |

I'm more frustrated with direct family though. I know my situation and what you need to get by here. They think every city is Vancouver, but what you have in Calgary is essentially one of the largest cities in North America, the sprawl is massive here. I live in a suburb with my friend and while transport to downtown is not bad, unless you work in downtown that's all transit is good for. You can get far in Alberta if you have a skill. You will most likely get a company vehicle or if you had a college education you will most likely be working downtown, since all of downtown Calgary is finance/oil/offices. Vacancy here is 1%. It also rubs salt in the wound when you have wealthy family members, and in the 3 months that I've been unemployed here (partially) they have never called once to see how I'm doing. They don't know that I went a week without food eating only protein shakes and oatmeal before i resorted to a food bank. I've applied for ~20 jobs a day through kijiji, have an impressive resume, a college education, about 12 mandatory certificates for trades and I can't get a fucking job. Either way the only reason I said don't rag on single mothers is because I was essentially raised by one and my best friend is a single mother so I know what she goes through. Career advancement is tough as a single mother because your daughter always comes first. She's been offered 2 dream jobs in different cities (for gaming companies) and she can't move because she doesn't want to ruin her daughters life. |
Sorry to hear, meowjin. If you were here, I'd probably just lend you a car til you got back on your feet. Where abouts are you located? There's a big difference between your situation and the people, 77, is talking about. They don't want any better and are just content leeching the system and the people taking food from the food bank, that can afford better, are just shameless pricks that will try to save a buck even at the expense of someone who's really in need. As far as the single mother thing goes.... sorry, I don't buy it. I was a single dad when I was 19 and no one gave me shit. I had to do some fucked up shit to get by and society didn't take pity on me or my situation. I could've went on welfare but I chose to push through and try to not go that route. There are way more programs and support for single moms, than dads. I'm not trying to sound like a martyr, all I'm saying is, just cause someone's a single mom, doesn't give them a free pass cause society labels them to be pitied. edit: Kudos to your friend for sticking around and toughing it out here, to keep here daughter in a stable environment. However, if life would be a lot easier in another town, with a better job, I'd say that's a choice she made, to not move. I wouldn't think a child's life would be ruined just cause they moved. |

A lot of us moved when we were children and our lives were not ruined..lol. That being said, also do consider MG1's offer; accepting handouts from strangers is something I wouldn't consider either - however, if a group of friends (which you can consider RS to be) extended their help out to me knowing I wasn't doing too well, I would gratefully accept. Not because I'm a loser, but because sometimes we have to take a bite out of pride to get ourselves back up. If you have a car, will your situation improve almost immediately? |
Edited for good reason. |

Does it involve impersonating................ Little Richard? All kidding aside, you have my respect. You could have just given up and let the little bitch ruin both you and your son's life. |
Ugh..thanks for the reality check Majin. I was thinking on heading out as well. No finances at all for a 500 dollar car? Monthly installment for insurance? Dang. I understand your mindset though, that you need to get out of this yourself. Commendable, but just not the dying part. Everyone needs a hand. Rich people get it all the time. Through connections for jobs/contracts, etc. Makes no sense why you can't get the same. |
Everyone can use a hand majin Look at this guy and his family get the biggest welfare cheque in the world and they're adored for it http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/...0_1857324f.jpg No reason to shy away from aid we could start an RS Fund |
If I see this on my UPS tracking, does that mean I'll have to pay a duty & brokerage for sure? Or does it still YMMV? Quote:
