I just got back from whipping out to Costco on Still Creek. I phoned the Brighton Avenue location and they didn't even receive them. Called Willingdon and they had 27 left. When I went this morning, they had a full pallet and people were buying them here and there. Lots of picture taking. Anyway, by the time I got to the Still Creek location there were only nine, maybe ten left. Thank god I didn't wait until the Blue Jays baseball game was over. I am not going to open the new one until tomorrow. Give it a day or so to really test the first one out. I do have a Dyson Hot/Cold that has HEPA filter, but right now, they are out of stock on filters and the filters are like $100.00. I have 5% filter life left as of today. These germ guardian filters are closer to $40.00 US.

StylinRed 09-17-2020 07:20 PM

Think the site I had bookmarked before was nytimes' wirecutter, anyhow, yeah germguardian seems to be a highly rated brand

Been trying to find a suitable air purifier for my parents, but they're selling out faster than I can find n research em! Will try heading to Costco in the morning

if you're having trouble sourcing and you don't mind, you can bojang one on the cheap

this is essentially what one is. you can add charcoal filter for smells, etc in addition to HEPA. personally i prefer a tunnel fan that can suck/push air in a direction vs a regular box fan but i know someone that did this and seems to work for them.

*edit*
my fav is the top comment about a lab coat and wall of books so you know it's legit :lol

I love the comments, but why not filter on back side?

Makes more sense to me.

That is not a HEPA filter. Nowhere on the packaging does it say HEPA, for one. It's a MERV 13 pleated filter, certainly much better than your standard MERV 7/8 pleated filters, but not HEPA. It's also installed incorrectly as the pleats are supposed to be vertical, not horizontal. In humid environments, this could cause the filter media to sag over time, reducing effectiveness. Installing the filter on the upstream side of the fan and sealing around the outside of the filter would improve the effectiveness of the filter as well. What about fan selection? Does the fan chosen generate enough static pressure to adequately overcome the pressure drop across the filter, especially once it's loaded? With the filter installed, how much flow is getting through? How many air changes per hour for your room (aka how large of a room will it reasonably filter)?

His test is also terrible as it's only measuring what's coming directly off the filter, which unless your face is directly in front of the filter the whole time, means nothing. What matters is how effectively it can reduce the ambient particle count within the space.

When we're doing HEPA testing at work, the way he does it is fine because we know we're pushing 12-30 air changes per hour, so any ambient particles are going to get pushed out of the space in 2-5 minutes and replaced with 100% HEPA-filtered outside air. He's testing a system that is 100% recirculation with an unadvertised amount of flow.

Just came across an ad by Mazda. It's Matsuda's (Mazda's) 100th Anniversary. Wow. I thought it was maybe 60 or 70 years old like Honda. Just out of curiosity, I googled Mitsubishi to see how old it was as a company. Did not know Mitsubishi was founded by Iwasaki Yataro. Damn, from my Japanese History class (Asian Studies at UBC), Yataro was a very prominent figure during the fall of the Shogunate and beginning of the Meiji Restoration.

Not as heroic as Sakamoto Ryoma, Iwasaki was more a business man than a fighter. The Diamond Star logo of Mitsubishi is derived from Iwasaki Yatoro's family crest.

Mitsubishi has been around for so long and has close ties with the government of Japan. Makes sense, Mitsubishi Zero, a famous fighter plane from WWII.

Anyway, happy birthday Matsuda.

My glasses fog up in this cold weather due to the mask.......

Contemplating buying this........

https://www.russellhendrix.com/produ...ngle-mask-10pk

$14.99 for a 10 pack.

They claim it will keep glasses from fogging up. You can clean it, too. Might be good for those times you're not getting close to anyone and outside.

twitchyzero 09-27-2020 01:13 AM

^ mazda was a corkmaker (yes cork), they didn't start cars until the 60s
depends what kind of mask you have; you can press down on the nose piece to contour around your bridge to reduce fogging

i just wanted to remind everyone to slowtfdown when it's pouring
wipers at fastest setting could barely keep up even below speed limit
was only seconds behind a 3-car collision right off port mann eastbound where the puddle usually collects

have you tried the defogging spray that people that ski/snowboard use on goggles? you can also try to place a folded layer at the top of the mask i think like with a tissue.

I don't have too much of a problem with the other types of masks I have. It's my go to, KN95 that's the problem. I like how it flexes when I breath in and out. Feels like it's doing a good job of filtration. It also fits my Asian face, shape. I have the washable cloth type with replaceable filter, but it's more for caucasian noses......... lol. No matter how I pinch the nose adjuster, it keeps falling off. What's the point in that?

I'm probably not going to try the shield type. I wouldn't feel protected.

I'll give the fog treatment you mentioned. In winter time, it's going to be a viable solution. First winter with this pandemic. Interesting..........

Does anyone know the Airbnb contact phone number?

Their support bot closed our case, and it hasn't been resolved.
Looked and searched and found a website with a 1-855 number, don't know how legit that number is.

MG1 09-29-2020 09:41 PM

Yeah, pretty bored..........

MG1 10-01-2020 05:02 PM

So, I've been looking at Heavenly Bodies for as long as I can remember.............

stars, planets, the moon, etc. Not so much the sun, except during total eclipses. Like a few years back, when I went down to Salem, Oregon with my sons to see the once-in-a-lifetime total eclipse.

Anyway, tonight, shortly after 7:15 or so, it's the Harvest Moon. With the haze and whatnot, it is going to be spectacular. Watch for it in the east. Just as it rises above the horizon is the best time. The moon will look like ten or more times bigger than normal.

MG1 10-01-2020 05:39 PM

Damn it. Too cloudy.

Has anyone got an electrical permit before?

Hey RS,

Has anyone gotten an electrical permit before?

My concern is that we did some material reno's in our ground level without permits. We converted a three bedroom and family room floor into a two bedroom suite and a studio suite.

I'm wanting to get an electric car and we'll need a 200A upgrade for our electrical to sustain the charger.

By applying for this electrical permit, will the inspector come to our house and inspect it?

SSM_DC5 10-02-2020 08:56 AM

If it's anything like a building permit, yes. They can go through your whole property to inspect.

ImportPsycho 10-02-2020 09:21 AM

https://thebigstorypodcast.ca/2020/1...out-recycling/

I think we all knew deep down, plastics aren't recyclable

underscore 10-02-2020 09:22 AM

It depends who you get, but from my experience most inspectors barely care about the thing you called them in for, let alone anything else on your property. When we totally redid our kitchen (moved all the lights, took out a wall, etc) the first guy just asked if we'd moved any plumbing and didn't look at anything. The second came about a foot inside the front door, said "yep, you took out a wall", signed the paper and left.

YES They will come out and inspect it, depending on your municipality and if it is a contractor doing the work or a home owner.

i am a electrical contractor, and in my many years of experience on dealing with inspectors. They wont care about what you did prior.

They will come inspect what they need to and get out. Vancouver electrical inspectors are very thorough on what they are inspecting, as long as you don't have anything in sight that is against code, un-safe or in the process of renovation you will be OK.

Hondaracer 10-02-2020 11:50 AM

For me, my argument with anyone who questions Reno’s etc. As long as the work is done properly, is who is to say when this work was done?

I know that some wiring has date stamps etc. But once it’s done and completed it’s pretty hard for Somone to say it was you who did the work and where’s the permits etc.
